PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 New details are emerging in a double homicide in Port St. Lucie on Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Port St. Lucie Police say the suspect, Paul Maraio, was involved in a dispute with the homeowners’ association where he lived, and they were in the process of evicting him.<\/p>\n

Police say Maraio, 62, went to the home of Mark Golden, 54, the HOA treasurer, and shot Golden in his garage.<\/p>\n

Next, police say Maraio went to the home of David Gasik, 75, and shot Gasik through a screen door. Gasik’s wife is the HOA secretary.<\/p>\n

Police say after he killed those two men<\/a>, Maraio went to the home nearby of Suzanne Rothermel, and took her hostage at gunpoint for about two hours.<\/p>\n

“The motive of this incident is stemming from a civil matter that was occurring between the suspect, Paul Maraio, and the HOA board within the community that the incident occurred. The HOA was actively seeking to evict the suspect from the community. They had deemed him to be a disruptive resident and somebody that made other people uncomfortable,” said Leo Niemczyk. The Police Chief says Maraio was armed with a .380 handgun.<\/p>\n

“I was going to die. I really thought I was going to die,” said Suzanne Rothermel. “Did you ask him why he would kill two other people and come in and take you hostage?<\/p>\n

Did you ask him what are you doing here? Why would you behave like that?” CBS12 News asked Rothermel.<\/p>\n

“Well, first of all, I knew he was mental. We all knew he was that way for years. Nobody ever did anything,” Rothermel said.<\/p>\n

Chief Niemczyk says Port St Lucie Police had responded three times previously to the community where the double homicide occurred because of a dispute between Mariao and Golden.<\/p>\n

Police were at Golden’s home on June 13, 2024, March 12, 2025, and September 22, 2025. Each time, the incident was a civil incident, not a criminal incident. Twice, police gave Maraio a trespass warning, meaning he would be arrested if he showed up at Golden’s house again within six months.<\/p>\n

Police say these trespass warnings last for six months.<\/p>\n

A trespass warning was in effect on Monday when Maraio shot and killed Golden and Gasik and took Rothermel hostage.<\/p>\n
