TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Florida lawmakers are pushing a new bill to protect historic monuments and memorials around the state.<\/p>\n
The \u201cHistoric Florida Monuments and Memorial Protection Act\u201d would prevent locl governments from removing, damaging or destroying these historical sites.<\/p>\n
The bill, filed by State Senator Stan McClain (R), would override local governments, and violations could be met with fines up to $1,000. <\/p>\n
If a monument is damaged, local governments would be responsible for restoration. If they can\u2019t afford it, the state would step in, but could withhold funding for arts and culture.<\/p>\n
The temporary relocation of a monument or memorial is allowed only under strict guidelines and in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n
