PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Florida teachers could be required to take an oath to the nation and the state before starting their roles in classrooms. <\/p>\n
This proposed legislation, filed by Republican lawmaker Rep. Tom Fabricio of Miami Lakes, aims to implement an oath similar to those taken by professionals like lawyers and doctors.<\/p>\n
The bill, titled HB 147,<\/a> was introduced on October 13 and is set to be considered during the Florida Legislature’s regular session beginning in January 2026.<\/p>\n See also: St. Lucie County seeing jump in tourism tax revenue<\/a><\/p>\n According to the bill’s text, all classroom teachers would need to subscribe to a specific oath before beginning their duties. <\/p>\n The oath includes pledges to support and defend the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of Florida, maintain professional integrity, create a respectful learning environment, and serve as a positive role model for students.<\/p>\n The full proposed oath reads:<\/p>\n I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support, protect, and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States and the Constitution and Government of the State of Florida; that I am duly qualified for employment as a classroom teacher in this state; that I will well and faithfully perform the duties of a classroom teacher in a professional, independent, objective, and nonpartisan manner; that I will uphold the highest standards of academic integrity and professional ethics; that I will foster a respectful learning environment for all students, which promotes critical thinking, civic responsibility, and lifelong learning; and that I will serve as a positive role model in both conduct and character, so help me God.<\/p>\n Find more ways to stay up to date with your latest local news.
