Defending \u2018Americanism\u2019<\/p>\n

In keeping with what I see as the Orlando Sentinel\u2019s continued liberal bias, all letters to the editor in the Sunday edition were anti-Trump or anti-conservative policy. One letter claimed we are in a state of fascism and we need a course called \u201cAmericanism vs. Fascism.\u201d Americanism can be defined as attachment to or allegiance to the traditions, institutions and ideals of the United States. I fail to see how defending our borders and deporting illegal immigrants is not adherence to Americanism. In my opinion, federal and military involvement is only required due to the impediments put in place by local liberal politicians.<\/p>\n

Another letter stated, \u201cCharter schools are causing an exodus from public schools and less use of public-school facilities.\u201d The writer is against the recent law passed to \u201callow charter schools to use space in public school facilities that are underused, with no compensation.\u201d There is a reason parents are fleeing public schools. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports about a third of eighth graders are failing to hit the NAEP Basic benchmark in reading, which is the largest ever, and 40% are working below the NAEP Basic level in math. Public schools were built using taxpayer dollars for the public good. If charter schools \u201ctake over public-school facilities,\u201d it will be due to the poor performance by the public schools, not one created by the charter schools wishing to improve education.<\/p>\n

Orlando a haven for entry-level jobs<\/p>\n

I believe the Sentinel once again twisted the tourism job statistics (\u201cOrlando ranks 49th out of 50 in wages,\u201d Nov. 16)<\/a>. Instead of demeaning tourism wages, the Sentinel should report that tourism keeps unemployment low in Orlando by providing opportunities for workers without college degrees or advanced technical skills. In addition, tourism provides entry-level jobs that help Orlando\u2019s ranking by a Wallethub analysis as the second-best city in the United States to start a career.<\/p>\n

DeSantis\u2019 moral inconsistency<\/p>\n

Having just heard that our governor has signed another death warrant for a convicted murderer this year, I\u2019m convinced that he believes that the taking of a life is OK, and that his understanding of the sanctity of life is incorrect. When I compare the number of deaths he has ordered versus his stance that the taking of a life via abortion is a high-order crime, it is easy to see that a moral inconsistency exists. He is either for the sanctity of life, or he\u2019s not. He can\u2019t have it both ways.<\/p>\n

Empty talk of reform<\/p>\n

Republicans have been criticizing the existing health care laws for a long time. They need to offer a solid alternative. The Trump-led GOP often claims to be \u201cthe party of health care,\u201d yet the party has not provided a detailed plan.<\/p>\n

Without a clear alternative, their talk of reform seems empty and leaves both the policy field and Americans in need without a new health care plan, despite repeated promises to \u201crepeal and replace\u201d the Affordable Care Act (ACA).<\/p>\n

Early in his 2024 campaign, Trump promised that \u201ceverybody\u2019s going to be taken care of much better than they\u2019re taken care of now,\u201d and said the government would pay for it \u2014 but the details have never been revealed.<\/p>\n
