The airport will begin the Gate Link Replacement Project, a $253 million overhaul aimed at creating a smoother and faster connection between the main terminal and the gate areas.

The project replaces the aging Gate Link system with new Mitsubishi tram vehicles and a full rebuild of the supporting infrastructure. This work is part of GOAA’s larger 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Program, which includes $5.9 billion in airport upgrades.

What’s Changing

MCO will replace the current Gate Link system serving Gates 70-129 on Airside 2 and Airside 4. The updated system will include four new Mitsubishi vehicles, similar to those added in 2017 for Airsides 1 and 3.

Along with new vehicles, crews will rebuild the full system that keeps Gate Link running:

New running surfaces
Upgraded traction systems
Updated power distribution
Modern vehicle controls and communication networks
New platform screen doors at boarding areas

These upgrades aim to improve reliability, safety, and long-term performance. The technology also supports better energy efficiency.

GOAA CEO Lance Lyttle said the upgrade will “enhance safety and ensure our Gate Link system serves passengers reliably for decades to come.”

Timeline and Travel Impact

Work runs from December 2025 through Fall 2027. To keep the airport moving, the project will unfold in phases, with one tram remaining in operation for most of the construction period.

Here’s what you can expect:

A few extra minutes added to the journey between the terminal and the airsides.
Occasional use of shuttle buses, mostly overnight.
Rental car and ground transportation users should add 30 minutes to pickup planning.
Additional guest service ambassadors and new wayfinding signage to help direct travelers.

MCO reminds travelers to follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 hours before departure at ticketing, 2 hours at security, and 1 hour at your gate.

The Gate Link Replacement Project is one piece of a much larger modernization effort across Orlando International Airport. GOAA’s 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Program includes:

More parking capacity
Expanded baggage handling
New and upgraded gate areas
Terminal A and B upgrades
Renovated restrooms and seating areas
Added retail and dining
Improved technology and wayfinding

Get Walt Disney World News Delivered to Your Inbox

Orlando International Airport is preparing for a major upgrade that will change how you move through MCO starting…

[11
115,139,141,32454,140
0":"post-51273","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-orlando","8":"tag-news","9":"tag-orlando","10":"tag-orlando-headlines","11":"tag-orlando-international-airport-begins-major-tram-replacement-project-connecting-terminals-a-and-b-to-airside-gates","12":"tag-orlando-news
["GET
