{"id":51810,"date":"2025-11-18T22:23:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T22:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/51810\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T22:23:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T22:23:07","slug":"missys-law-filed-to-become-law-following-death-of-5-year-old-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/51810\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Missy&#8217;s Law&#8221; filed to become law following death of 5-year-old girl"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TALLAHASSEE, FL \u2014 On Tuesday, November 18th, Representative Sam Greco filed <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/f4\/f1\/dfcf252f45139f98133bc1d437b6\/missy-law-filed.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House Bill 445<\/a> to become law. Better known as &#8220;Missy&#8217;s Law,&#8221; the bill seeks to keep a person found guilty of a dangerous crime to remain in custody until sentencing. <\/p>\n<p>The bill comes after 5-year-old <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/downtown-tallahassee\/new-details-in-the-deadly-child-abuse-investigation-of-melissa-missy-mogle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Melissa &#8220;Missy&#8221; Mogle<\/a> was found unresponsive at her home in May in Tallahassee. Her mother and stepfather, Chloe and Daniel Spencer, were charged with her death. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/downtown-tallahassee\/state-attorney-seeking-death-penalty-for-daniel-spencer-grand-jury-indicts-on-first-degree-murder-charges\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In July,<\/a> Attorney General James Uthmeier said he was working to create Missy\u2019s Law in relation to this case, targeting judges. Daniel was convicted of another crime prior to Missy&#8217;s death, but was allowed out on bond by a Leon County judge when she was killed.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/downtown-tallahassee\/new-trial-date-set-for-stepfather-accused-of-killing-5-year-old-stepdaughter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Spencer&#8217;s trial <\/a>was set for November but will now happen next June, and he&#8217;s due back in court in February. <\/p>\n<p>Chloe is due back in court on December 3rd.<\/p>\n<p>Both face first-degree murder charges, and the State Attorney&#8217;s Office plans to seek the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Want to see more local news?
