KISSIMMEE, Fla. \u2014\u00a0It\u2019s the first and only program in Florida offering college credits for a degree to be a semiconductor engineer technician. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Valencia College is leading a pathway to a cutting-edge industry that pays well.<\/p>\n

More semiconductor companies are moving to Central Florida<\/p>\n

Calvin Wilkinson is one of the first five students studying for the new Associate of Science Degree in Semiconductor Engineering<\/a>. It\u2019s being offered at Valencia College\u2019s Kissimmee campus.<\/p>\n

Wilkinson says, \u201cI know that semiconductors are a huge industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cI also know that semiconductors are the backbone of the artificial intelligence industry and just seeing how far that\u2019s grown in the last few years. It\u2019s incredible, and I want to be part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lara Sharp is the dean of the School of Engineering, Technology and Advanced Manufacturing.\u00a0 She says everyone uses semiconductor chips every day.<\/p>\n

Sharp points out, \u201cTheir cell phones. Their TVs. Their laptops. Video games. They all use chips. So, this is something that\u2019s relevant to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharp says the new degree will empower graduates to get a job paying at $40,000 to $50,000, working with SkyWater Technology, Lockheed Martin, Draper and L3 Harris. They are partners who are shaping the program\u2019s curriculum. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Valencia College has a virtual clean room where students learn what it\u2019s like to work in a real clean room, which is a pristine environment to help prevent semiconductor chips from getting scratched during production.<\/p>\n

Sharp explains, \u201cHaving that knowledge beforehand on how to suit up and get ready to go into the clean room and how to actually work inside the clean room, and things like that, will make them more marketable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Provost Yolanda Brown oversees workforce education at Valencia College. Brown is focusing on the future as more semiconductor companies move to Central Florida. \u00a0<\/p>\n

She says, \u201cAs the jobs continue to open, our students, those who started with us, are the ones who can fill those jobs first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilkinson plans to build his career here in Orlando.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an industry that is totally sustainable and stable for my future, so that\u2019s why I\u2019m pursuing it,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Valencia semiconductor engineering graduates will be able to direct connect to the University of Central Florida, which will soon offer a bachelor\u2019s degree in the same field.<\/p>\n
