LA ESQUINA DEL CAFE \u2014 DEERFIELD BEACH<\/p>\n
Tucked inside a BP gas station at Sample Road and North Dixie Highway, La Esquina del Cafe is the definition of an unexpected standout. The take-out counter serving Mexican and Cuban favorites just landed a flawless inspection.<\/p>\n
Manager Darlene Tortosa could hardly contain herself as she held up the award:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
Asked whether maintaining a perfect kitchen is difficult, she didn\u2019t hesitate:<\/p>\n
\u201cYes it is very difficult. The boss is very, very, very particular,\u201d Tortosa added. <\/p>\n
When Weinsier asked if \u201cthe boss is on you,\u201d she replied: \u201cYea.\u201d<\/p>\n
And about keeping standards high: \u201cEvery day I clean — everyday — every time. Ours is very clean.\u201d<\/p>\n
She proudly lists what they serve:<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, taco, burrito — this is our menu. I\u2019m open Monday to Sunday. I have juice, coffee, breakfast sandwiches, lunch, croquetas.\u201d<\/p>\n
La Esquina hasn\u2019t had a high-priority violation since 2023. As Tortosa put it simply:<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything! Everything is good? Everything!\u201d she said. \u201cEverything is fresh — everything is clean so it\u2019s the most important for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
SEASIDE SUBS \u2014 DEERFIELD BEACH<\/p>\n
A few miles away in the Cove Shopping Center sits Seaside Subs, where owner Andrew Eisnitz was handed his own Clean Plate Award.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are at Seaside Subs in Deerfield Florida in the Cove Shopping Center,\u201d he said proudly.<\/p>\n
Accepting the award, he added: \u201cLook at that .. even you guys know. This is the Local 10 Clean Plate Award. I\u2019ve seen you man.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked whether earning a perfect inspection is tough, he didn\u2019t sugarcoat it:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is hard to do. I spend a lot of extra hours. I wish I was home doing something else.\u201d<\/p>\n
The shop celebrates its seven-year anniversary on December 7. And Eisnitz makes his pitch with confidence:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe make the best subs in town!\u201d<\/p>\n
He describes the lineup with the enthusiasm of someone who does it all from scratch:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe make cold Italians, roast beefs, we do cheese steaksm we do chicken cutlets.. we have the best chicken cutlets.. we make them to order.. they are not sitting in a pan all day waiting for you to come in.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe make French dips, make our own turkey, make our own roast beef, make our own mac salad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Holding up his new award, he sealed the moment:<\/p>\n
\u201cI love it man. Thank you very much. I\u2019m very proud of that,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
GUATEMALA RESTAURANT \u2014 FORT LAUDERDALE<\/p>\n
On Davie Boulevard, west of Interstate 95, Guatemala Restaurant has been a neighborhood fixture for nearly 26 years \u2014 a true family operation now honored with its own perfect report.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe work hard every day,\u201d said manager Emilser Estrada. At the end of the day, we make sure everything is clean .. and we check twice. In some cases, we check three times.\u201d<\/p>\n
And about the job:<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you love your job you try to do the best,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
The customer loyalty spans generations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a good amount of good customers. We treat them like family. Actually, now we see their children, the children of your original customers. They bring their family,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n
From the kitchen \u2014 where everything is visible to diners \u2014 Estrada points to what keeps people coming back:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have soups. People love our soup.\u201d<\/p>\n
And yes, it\u2019s all made from scratch:<\/p>\n
\u201cNothing frozen. We cook everything fresh and our customers can see us while we are cooking,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
When handed the Clean Plate Award, he heard the words every restaurant hopes for:<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you for keeping it clean and keeping us safe. So we are going to give you that to put up for everyone to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
Three spotless kitchens. Three perfect inspections. Three proud local businesses doing things the right way. These restaurants don\u2019t just serve good food \u2014 they put health and safety on the menu. And that\u2019s exactly the kind of place we should be supporting.<\/p>\n
