Unions representing local police and firefighters are supporting\u00a0Eileen Higgins\u00a0for Mayor.<\/p>\n
The Miami Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 20, which represents officers protecting Miami neighborhoods, and the Miami Association of Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 587, are each endorsing the former Miami-Dade Commissioner for Miami Mayor.<\/p>\n

She listens to officers, invests in the tools and training we need, and understands the importance of ethical leadership at City Hall,\u201d Miami Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 20 President\u00a0Felix Del Rosario\u00a0said on behalf of the union\u2019s members.<\/p>\n

Alex\u00a0Cardenas\u00a0of the Miami Association of Fire Fighters praised Higgins for understanding \u201cthe realities of our work and what it takes to keep our residents safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Higgins, in response to the endorsement, praised first responders, including firefighters, who she said \u201care the ones who run toward danger when everyone else is running away.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey protect our homes, our families, and our city with courage that deserves nothing less than full partnership from City Hall. As Mayor, I will work every day to make sure our firefighters have safe equipment, modern stations, and the respect and resources they need to keep Miami safe,\u201d Higgins said.<\/p>\n
Similarly, Higgins praised the city\u2019s police officers for putting their lives on the line day in and day out to protect citizens.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe safety of our residents is the foundation of a strong and thriving city \u2014 which is why, as County Commissioner, I was proud to deliver investments that have helped keep both officers and residents safe. That includes supporting ShotSpotter technology to improve emergency response, collaborating with police to strengthen safety on our transit system, and ensuring officers have up-to-date equipment, communications tools, and the staffing they need to respond to dangerous situations,\u201d Higgins said.<\/p>\n
She added that as Mayor, she will \u201ccontinue to stand firmly with the men and women who protect our neighborhoods and our families.\u201d<\/p>\n
Higgins is competing in a Dec. 9 runoff against former City Manager\u00a0Emilio Gonz\u00e1lez\u00a0for the right to succeed outgoing Miami Mayor\u00a0Francis Suarez. The pair\u00a0topped 11 other candidates<\/a>\u00a0in Miami\u2019s Nov. 4 General Election, with Higgins taking 36% and Gonz\u00e1lez capturing 19.5% of the vote.<\/p>\n Internal polling<\/a>\u00a0shows Higgins with a high likelihood of winning the runoff.<\/p>\n The latest endorsements come after a nod\u00a0from two Service Employees International Union (SEIU) affiliates<\/a>, including SEIU Local 1991, which represents nurses, physicians and other health care professionals, and the\u00a0SEIU Florida State Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n She also has support from\u00a01199SEIU<\/a>,\u00a0SEIU 32BJ<\/a>,\u00a0AFSCME Local 1907<\/a>,\u00a0UNITE HERE Local 355<\/a>,\u00a0SAVE Action PAC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0LiUNA Local 1652<\/a>. LGBTQ advocacy groups\u00a0Equality Florida Action PAC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0EMILY\u2019s List<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0abortion rights organization\u00a0Ruth\u2019s List Florida<\/a>\u00a0are also supporting Higgins.<\/p>\n So are U.S. Rep.\u00a0Frederica Wilson, Miami-Dade Mayor\u00a0Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade Commissioners\u00a0Oliver Gilbert\u00a0and\u00a0Danielle Cohen Higgins, Miami Gardens state Sen.\u00a0Shevrin Jones, Miami state Rep.\u00a0Ashley Gantt, South Miami Mayor\u00a0Javier Fern\u00e1ndez\u00a0and former Miami Beach Mayor\u00a0Dan Gelber.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Unions representing local police and firefighters are supporting\u00a0Eileen Higgins\u00a0for Mayor.
