Jacksonville is preparing for a contentious 2026 as conflicts with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis<\/a> and other state leaders center on the city\u2019s budget, property taxes and the limits of local authority.<\/p>\n

DeSantis and Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia have publicly called Jacksonville\u2019s spending \u201cwasteful\u201d<\/a> and directed the state\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to audit and pressure local governments to cut millage rates and reduce budgets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

State leaders are also backing a 2026 ballot initiative that would significantly cut or eliminate property taxes<\/a> \u2014 a move proponents say will relieve homeowners but that city officials warn could \u201cdecimate\u201d funding for police, fire and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan<\/a>, a Democrat<\/a>, frames the state\u2019s actions as \u201cconstant partisan attacks,\u201d<\/a> arguing they distract from urgent local needs such as affordable housing<\/a> and rising health care costs<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The Legislature\u2019s pattern of preemption<\/a> \u2014 already used to nullify local tenant-protection ordinances<\/a> \u2014 further constrains Jacksonville\u2019s ability to tailor policies on housing, environment and economic development. <\/p>\n

While Tallahassee has sometimes funded high-profile infrastructure needs (for example, JaxPort-related projects<\/a>), many community-focused programs favored by the mayor have faced line-item vetoes or limited support<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This dispute goes beyond politics and affects how everyday services are delivered and who controls local priorities. <\/p>\n
