Leer en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/p>\nEsha Dawkins spoke to local media outlets on Tuesday, the anniversary of the Nov. 25, 2024 shooting. She was caught in the middle of a shootout near the Golden Glades interchange when a stray bullet entered her SUV.<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard the first shot. I didn\u2019t think it was a shot. I thought it was fireworks,\u201d Dawkins said. \u201cThe second shot I heard, I felt the glass hit me. I thought I got hit in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n
The bullet narrowly missed her 5-year-old son, Sam.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just opened the door,\u201d Dawkins said. \u201cI took him out, sat on the side of 95 and told him to hold me: \u2018Mama loves you, but I might not make it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
X-rays show the bullet remains lodged in her neck today.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt entered through my windshield, through the driver\u2019s side, into my neck and it\u2019s now sitting behind my throat, sitting in front of the spine,\u201d Dawkins said. \u201cIt\u2019s more dangerous to take it out than to leave it there, because I may be paralyzed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dawkins\u2019 attorney, Willard Shepard, joined her at Tuesday\u2019s news conference.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re calling for more cameras on I-95, specifically near the Golden Glades, especially after recent road rage shootings.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, if you\u2019re not a felon, you can carry a weapon,\u201d Shepard said. \u201cSo, therefore, the volume of people that are carrying weapons legally in the state simply opens the door, mathematically, for this type of thing to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
She now plans to take her pleas for more highway cameras to Tallahassee.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t know who did it, what was happening, but I\u2019m just thankful that I\u2019m still here,\u201d Dawkins said.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement officials are continuing to look for the shooter.<\/p>\n
