Busy holiday travel weekend kicks off in Miami <\/p>\n
MIAMI \u2014 The holiday hustle is here as travelers are rushing to get home in time for Thanksgiving. <\/p>\n
While experts predict this year\u2019s travel period will be busier than ever before, the crowds were not causing any major lines at Miami International Airport on Wednesday morning. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt was fairly easy, I took a redeye so that was a given,\u201d said Gianna Russi, who is visiting from Boston. \u201cBut Boston doesn\u2019t have too many lines, at least through the gate I go to, but today there was a bit of a line, but nothing too hectic.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Thanksgiving travel rush meaning TSA checkpoints both in South Florida and around the nation will be packed, especially on the days after the holiday. <\/p>\n
MIA anticipates screening up to 80,000 people per day.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey want to make sure that when you get on that aircraft nobody is bringing anything nefarious,\u201d said Daniel Velez with TSA. <\/p>\n
Weapons like batons, axes and knives are prohibited.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be very busy all this week,\u201d said Velez. \u201cFrom Monday to Monday we\u2019re expecting to screen about 640,000 people here at MIA.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the large crowds, terminals at MIA have so far been smooth, which has been an unexpected surprise for some fliers. <\/p>\n
