The union representing teachers and staff at the largest institution in the Florida College System is putting its sizable support behind Eileen Higgins\u2019 bid for Miami Mayor.<\/p>\n
United Faculty of Miami Dade College<\/a> has endorsed Higgins, a former Miami-Dade County Commissioner, citing her commitment to expanding skills training, economic mobility and opportunities for Miami residents.<\/p>\n The organization\u2019s President, Elizabeth Ramsay, said in a statement that Higgins \u201cbrings integrity, experience, and a genuine commitment to helping everyone in Miami succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOur faculty see firsthand the transformative power of education and skills training, and we need leaders who understand that prosperity must be shared across our whole community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cCommissioner Eileen Higgins has been a true partner to Miami Dade College \u2014 investing in programs that upskill workers, strengthen small businesses, and expand opportunities for students and residents.\u201d<\/p>\n A press note from Higgins\u2019 campaign said that while serving on the County Commission between 2018 and 2025, Higgins worked closely with Miami Dade College faculty to broaden skill-training opportunities, support small businesses and expand entrepreneurship programs.<\/p>\n The campaign also noted Higgins\u2019 Elevate District 5<\/a> initiative, which supported programs that provided hands-on classes, individualized coaching and financial resources to help entrepreneurs modernize their businesses and create new jobs.<\/p>\n The new nod from United Faculty of Miami Dade College joins others from a dozen other collective bargaining organizations, including the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, Miami Association of Firefighters<\/a>, four SEIU chapters<\/a>, AFSCME Local 1907<\/a>,\u00a0UNITE HERE Local 355<\/a>,\u00a0SAVE Action PAC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0LiUNA Local 1652<\/a>.<\/p>\n LGBTQ advocacy groups\u00a0Equality Florida Action PAC<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0EMILY\u2019s List<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0abortion rights organization\u00a0Ruth\u2019s List Florida<\/a>\u00a0are also supporting Higgins.<\/p>\n So are U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and\u00a0Frederica Wilson, Miami-Dade Mayor\u00a0Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade Commissioners\u00a0Oliver Gilbert\u00a0and\u00a0Danielle Cohen Higgins, Miami Gardens state Sen.\u00a0Shevrin Jones, Miami state Rep.\u00a0Ashley Gantt, South Miami Mayor\u00a0Javier Fern\u00e1ndez\u00a0and former Miami Beach Mayor\u00a0Dan Gelber.<\/p>\n
