Last week, New Times wrote about a study that ranked the best U.S. cities to celebrate Thanksgiving<\/a>. Unfortunately, the Miami-Dade County suburb of Hialeah ranked No. 99, owing to its lack of traditions, affordability, and its low number of pumpkin patches per capita. <\/p>\n

The story elicited spirited responses across social media, particularly from Hialeah residents, who wanted to either defend their community\u2019s Thanksgiving celebrations or explain why the suburb was so low on the list. If you took a gander through the comments on New Times\u2018 social media accounts, you may have noticed that many residents noted that Hialeah doesn\u2019t celebrate what\u2019s commonly known as Thanksgiving. In their neck of the woods, the celebration is known as \u201cSan Gibin,\u201d<\/a> thanks to its large Cuban population and the Miami dialect<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a sampling of what people had to say <\/a>about Hialeah\u2019s place in the ranking:<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Thanksgiving?<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, you mean San-givi?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they call it Sans-gibing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Hialeah is in Cuba, so of course they don\u2019t celebrate there, it\u2019s only an American holiday.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Hialeah, people celebrate sangivin\u2019 very different thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut y\u2019all didn\u2019t say anything about \u2018Sangeevee’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because it\u2019s San Giving\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEasy\u2026 because in Hialeah we celebrate San Givin no Thanksgiving\u2026\ud83d\ude02\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a day off, it\u2019s not Thanksgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turkey Pig Day<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the best if you hate turkey and love lechon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey celebrate by eating pork and partying different way to celebrate Thanksgiving but I bet it is more fun here than anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess the per Capita of barbecued whole pig carcasses don\u2019t factor in\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the turkeys are moving to Hialeah, they feel safe there for Thanksgiving, the pigs not so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do Lechon Baby!!! Turkey is dry and boring!!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBased on everyone\u2019s menu. I think I would rather go to Hialeah to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI live in Hialeah, and we get together every Thanksgiving to celebrate it, and everyone I know, so nope not true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot if you\u2019re a turkey\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur various tasty roast mojo pork recipes with a side of rice and beans and sweet fried plantain would like a word\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we Cubans don\u2019t eat turkey nor sweet potato casserole lol.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo surprise. Caja China does not work on turkeys.\u201d<\/p>\n

No. 1 in Our Hearts<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s fine, they\u2019ll take the top for Noche Buena! \ud83d\ude02 undisputed champs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Noche Buena, it\u2019s No.1 in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs someone who lives in Hialeah, I agree. But we are trying to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are just jealous we have strawberry fields while they have snowstorms?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, really? Just because we don\u2019t always have turkey doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t enjoy it. Plus we add suspense and drama at dinner, depending who shows up or what topics come up\ud83d\ude06.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever\u2019s responsible for this ranking has obviously never celebrated Sangivin in Hialeah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUhhhhh nope, a Cuban Thanksgiving in my hometown is the best !!! No joda\u00a0\ud83e\udd26\u200d\u2640\ufe0f\u201d<\/p>\n
