Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said he plans to investigate Campbell Soup Company over allegations it uses \u201clab grown meat\u201d in soups \u2014 a claim the company vehemently denies.<\/p>\n
The investigation comes after a TV station in Detroit<\/a> reported Monday on an audio recording of a Campbell\u2019s vice president criticizing the company for using \u201cbioengineered meat\u201d and saying that he didn\u2019t want to \u201ceat a piece of chicken that came from a 3-D printer.\u201d<\/p>\n Uthmeier responded to the report in a Monday post on X, where he vowed to look into it.<\/p>\n \u201cFlorida law bans lab-grown meat. Our Consumer Protection division is launching an investigation and will demand answers from Campbell\u2019s,\u201d Uthmeier wrote.<\/p>\n In a statement posted to the company\u2019s website, Campbell\u2019s denied the claims, saying it uses chicken from \u201clong-trusted, USDA approved U.S. suppliers\u201d in its soups.<\/p>\n \u201cCampbell\u2019s soups are made with real chicken. Period,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe take enormous pride in the food we make. Our soups are made with real ingredients, including real chicken meat that meets our high standards for taste, quality, and safety,\u201d the company wrote.<\/p>\n In 2024, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law that banned the use of lab-grown meat in Florida, becoming the first state to do so.<\/p>\n Campbell\u2019s does use \u201cbioengineered food ingredients,\u201d but that refers to genetically modified crops, such as canola, corn, soybean and sugar beets, not chicken, it said.<\/p>\n Lab-grown meat, or \u201ccultivated meat\u201d involves growing animal cells and arranging them in a similar way to animal tissue instead of raising livestock.
