WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he is barring South Africa from participating in the Group of 20 summit next year at his\u00a0Miami-area club<\/a>\u00a0and will stop all payments and subsidies to the country over its treatment of a U.S. government representative at this year\u2019s\u00a0global meeting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump chose not to have an American government delegation attend last weekend\u2019s summit hosted by South Africa, saying he did so because its\u00a0white Afrikaners<\/a>\u00a0were being\u00a0violently persecuted<\/a>. It is\u00a0a claim<\/a>\u00a0that South Africa, which was mired for decades in\u00a0racial apartheid<\/a>, has rejected as\u00a0baseless<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Republican president, in a social media post, said South Africa had refused to hand over its G20 hosting responsibilities to a senior representative of the U.S. Embassy when the summit ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year,\u201d Trump posted on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

\u201cSouth Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere,\u201d he said, \u201cand we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n

South Africa said it considered the U.S. decision to appoint a local embassy official for the G20 handover an insult. The ceremony instead happened at its Foreign Ministry building after the summit \u201cas the United States was not present at the summit,\u201d a statement from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

The statement said Ramaphosa \u201cnoted the regrettable statement by President Donald Trump on South Africa\u2019s participation in the 2026 G20 meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n

It also pushed back against Trump\u2019s widely rejected claims that Afrikaner farmers are being killed and having their land taken away, saying that Trump \u201ccontinues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

In some ways, Trump views next year\u2019s G20 summit as personal, given that he announced it will be at his golf club in Doral, Florida.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s summit in Johannesburg, the first held in Africa, was\u00a0boycotted<\/a>\u00a0by the United States, a G20 founding member and the world\u2019s biggest economy. The meeting\u2019s declaration, giving more attention to issues that affect developing countries, went unsigned by Washington, and the Trump administration expressed\u00a0its opposition to South Africa\u2019s agenda<\/a>, especially the parts that focus on climate change.<\/p>\n

The U.S. has now taken over the rotating presidency of the G20, leaving the long-term impact of the South African declaration unclear.<\/p>\n

Trump has claimed that white\u00a0Afrikaner farmers in South Africa<\/a>\u00a0are being killed and that their land is being seized. The\u00a0South African government<\/a>\u00a0and others, including some Afrikaners themselves, say Trump\u2019s claims are the result of misinformation.<\/p>\n

South Africa has been a target for Trump since he returned to office at the start of the year, with his administration\u00a0casting the country as anti-American<\/a>\u00a0because of its diplomatic ties with China, Russia and Iran.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Trump administration announced it would\u00a0restrict the number of refugees<\/a>\u00a0admitted annually to the U.S. to 7,500, with most of the spots reserved for white South Africans. Trump had suspended the refugee program on his first day in office in January. Since then only a trickle have entered the country, mostly white South Africans. In May, the administration welcomed a\u00a0group of 59 white South Africans<\/a>\u00a0as refugees.<\/p>\n

Afrikaners are South Africans who are descended mainly from Dutch but also French and German colonial settlers who first came to the country in the 17th century.<\/p>\n

Afrikaners were at the heart of the\u00a0apartheid system of white minority rule<\/a>\u00a0from 1948-1994, leading to decades of hostility between them and South Africa\u2019s Black majority. But Afrikaners are not a homogenous group, and some fought against apartheid.<\/p>\n

There are an estimated 2.7 million Afrikaners in South Africa\u2019s population of 62 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
