MIAMI \u2014 A jury was deliberating on Monday in a rapper\u2019s defamation case against an entertainment commentator in federal civil court in downtown Miami. <\/p>\n
Megan Pete, better known as Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, sued Milagro Cooper, better known for her entertainment coverage as \u201cMilagro Gramz,\u201d on Oct. 29, 2024. <\/p>\n
Daystar Peterson, better known as Canadian rapper Tory Lanez, was at the center of the case. Pete\u2019s attorneys claimed Cooper \u201cacted on behalf of\u201d Peterson as \u201can online rumor mill churning out falsehoods … to her tens of thousands of social media followers.\u201d<\/p>\n
U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisette M. Reid, who was presiding over the civil case in Miami, fined Peterson $20,000 \u201cfor his obstruction\u201d during Pete\u2019s attorneys\u2019 failed attempts to depose him, records show. <\/p>\n

Pete was injured during a shooting on July 12, 2020. According to Los Angeles detectives, Peterson and Pete \u201cwere riding in an SUV in the Hollywood Hills\u201d and Peterson shot at Pete \u201cfive times\u201d after she \u201cgot out of the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n
After a trial, Peterson was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. <\/p>\n
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford sentenced Peterson to 10 years in prison on Aug. 8, 2023<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cPeterson has engaged in a pattern of conduct that was intended to intimidate Ms. Pete and silence her,\u201d District Attorney Gasc\u00f3n said after the sentencing<\/a> — also praising \u201cher incredible bravery and vulnerability as she underwent months of probing investigation and court appearances where she had to relive her trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n Peterson lost his appeal on Nov. 12.
