TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV\/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) – Florida\u2019s largest teacher association is accusing the state of overstepping its authority over a new rule requiring university professors to submit syllabi weeks before the semester begins.<\/p>\n
The Florida Education Association filed a petition <\/a>challenging the Department of Education\u2019s rule change<\/a> on how college professors prepare for the semester. During last month\u2019s meeting, the Board of Education changed an administrative rule requiring university professors to turn in a final syllabus 45 days before classes start for public review.<\/p>\n The idea is to increase transparency.<\/p>\n Florida Politics<\/p>\n The Florida Education Association is pushing back against the rule, claiming it\u2019s not practical and the state doesn\u2019t have the power to enforce it. Professors say it makes it harder to teach their students.<\/p>\n \u201cRegulations like this make it harder because one of the things that we need in order to teach effectively is the flexibility to respond to the students we actually have,\u201d said David Newheiser, a Florida State University professor.<\/p>\n The amended rule is scheduled to take effect before the upcoming spring semester.<\/p>\n Copyright 2025 WCTV.
