Sergeant with Port St. Lucie Police Department shot while on duty <\/p>\n
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. \u2014 A sergeant with the Port St. Lucie Police Department was injured in a shooting on Monday. <\/p>\n
According to Port St. Lucie police, that sergeant, who has been identified as 27-year-old Erik Levasseur, was shot was investigating a disturbance around 6 p.m. and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent surgery later in the evening. <\/p>\n
Six officers initially responded to the scene for an apparent neighbor dispute that involved a mental health call, Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk said while addressing the media. <\/p>\n
When those officers arrived, the chief said they found the suspect holding an assault rifle. <\/p>\n
Niemczyk said it was then that the suspect shot his sergeant in the face. <\/p>\n
That suspect was subsequently killed in an exchange of gunfire that followed, the chief said. <\/p>\n
The injured sergeant is expected to be okay, and Niemczyk said he is optimistic he will recover. <\/p>\n
\u201cAt this time, we\u2019re just asking for prayers,\u201d said Niemczyk. \u201cAs you can see, I\u2019ve got tremendous support from our law enforcement community, and I can\u2019t thank them enough for that. And at this point all we really need from the community is their support and their prayers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The scene remained active with investigators working diligently, though officers did say there was no threat to the community. <\/p>\n
