Magic City is already a master of maximalism<\/a>, but during Art Basel Miami Beach<\/a> the over-the-top oneupmanship soars to even greater heights. Private island mansions open their doors to exclusive soirees dotted with six-figure artworks to entice collectors (and usually attracting a Kardashian or two). The world\u2019s most sought-after DJs and performers fly in to play invite-only penthouse parties and pop-ups along the beach. And it seems as if every hotel and restaurant is hosting an event of their own. For any hedonistic, scene-loving, art-collecting jet-setter, winter season doesn\u2019t kick off without a well-documented appearance at Miami Art Week<\/a>, which has grown to become one of the largest events of its kind in the world, with more than 20 fairs\u2014including the crown jewel, Art Basel\u2014and a thousand-plus participating galleries.<\/p>\n

Rumors about the best parties\u2014which happen during the week so you can be well on your way to Gstaad before everyone else descends on the fairs over the weekend\u2014start swirling just days before Art Basel begins (December 5). While you wait for your invites, here\u2019s how to plot the right course through town.<\/p>\n

The Scene<\/p>\n

The majority of the fairs and events are scattered around Miami Beach, Downtown Miami, Wynwood, and the Miami Design District. Getting across the causeways to the beach, a trip that normally takes 15 to 20 minutes, can drag for more than an hour in traffic so don\u2019t plan to hop back and forth. Pick a spot and stick to it for the day (or night).<\/p>\n

It goes without saying that you should start with the main attraction, Art Basel Miami Beach<\/a> (December 5-7), which takes place in the Miami Beach Convention Center\u2014you can\u2019t miss Pucci artistic director Camille Miceli\u2019s colorful spin on the entrances. \u201cThis year\u2019s edition feels unmistakably future-facing, with a slate of new initiatives that expand the fair\u2019s footprint and reimagine how audiences move through, interact with, and interpret the art on view,\u201d says Art Basel director Bridget Finn, adding that they have introduced collaborations with the likes of Salone del Mobile, Design Within Reach, and Marc Jacobs.<\/p>\n

More than two-thirds of this year\u2019s Basel celebrates artists and galleries operating in the Americas and \u201ccasts a particularly strong light on the ongoing remapping of the Latin American canon,\u201d Finn says. A highlight: Mazzoleni<\/a>\u2019s Kabinett presentation of 1950s and \u201960s works by Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, which showcase his blend of Surrealism, Afro-Cuban spirituality, and postwar abstraction.<\/p>\n

Across the street, Design Miami<\/a> (December 3-7) champions visionaries and the evolution of collectible design, while Scope<\/a>\u2019s tent on the sand features more than 80 galleries, large-scale installations, and digital art experiences. \u201cI feel like Basel has become more intentional over the years\u2014you see more diverse voices, deeper storytelling,\u201d says Loug\u00e8 Delcy, artist and founder of Galerie Loug\u00e8<\/a>, whose photography is heavily influenced by his Haitian heritage. \u201cAs one of the few Black-led art galleries in the art world, showcasing at SCOPE feels disruptive in the best possible way\u2014it lets us own our narrative and share the beauty and complexity of our communities with a global audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off the coast at the underwater sculpture park Reefline<\/a>, an installation by Argentine conceptual artist Leandro Erlich consisting of 22 designed-to-scale cars submerged nearly 20 feet deep is already the most talked-about exhibition (if you can call it that) of the week\u2014and can be viewed via electric paddle-board. In Downtown Miami, Art Miami<\/a>\u2014the city\u2019s longest-running contemporary art fair\u2014and Context Art Miami<\/a> (December 2-7) are among the can\u2019t-miss legacy fairs, along with Red Dot Miami and Spectrum Miami<\/a> at Mana Wynwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wynwood Walls<\/a>, the graffiti-ed living street art museum, inaugurates a slew of new murals and sculptures during Miami Art Week, a highlight being the first collaboration between Retna (the artist behind Louis Vuitton\u2019s Volez, Voguez, Voyagez exhibition) and El Mac, who is known for blurring the line between graffiti and fine art. \u201cThis year, Miami Art Week feels less about spectacle and more about neighborhoods and subcultures,\u201d says Lia Figueredo, principal of Mirth Studio<\/a>, the firm behind Red Dot and Spectrum. \u201cThe real magic is in stitching together those worlds of blue-chip fairs, emerging galleries, and the intimate venues where Miami actually experiments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The easiest way to hop around the fair is by foot or public trolley (a local hack that\u2019ll have you breezing through traffic), so sleep in the heart of the action on Miami Beach. The Shelborne by Proper<\/a> recently revealed a fresh face following an impressive $100 million renovation, which includes its cabana-clad, 1950s-era pool (the perfect place to unwind between events).<\/p>\n

Two blocks away, the Setai Miami Beach<\/a> is arguably one of the most sumptuous stays in the city and draws a well-heeled crowd for cocktails around the courtyard serenity pond and newly renovated lobby bar. Catty-corner to the Bass Museum<\/a>, it\u2019s worth making the quick jaunt over to catch Jack Pierson: The Miami Years, a blend of photography, collage, and installation influenced by the artist\u2019s stint in the city in the mid-1980s. Soho Beach House<\/a>\u2019s waterfront tent hosts some of the week\u2019s top art talks and events, like Rimowa\u2019s annual afterparty, and the members\u2019 club is a revolving door of artists and creatives lounging poolside between fetes (plus, the garden at Cecconi’s is a reliable spot for a quick bite when you actually have time to stop and eat).<\/p>\n

The aforementioned Galerie Loug\u00e8<\/a> is extending beyond SCOPE and also exhibiting at the Standard Spa, Miami Beach<\/a>. The Belle Isle hotel is close enough to Miami Beach (you can walk to get your morning smoothie at Pura Vida<\/a> in Sunset Harbour) while still feeling like a retreat away from the Basel madness.<\/p>\n

Recover at the spa with a sound healing massage and vitamin B12 shot before retreating to your room\u2014ask for one of the five that have been temporarily swathed by Dutch design brand Moooi<\/a> in their signature minimalist chic aesthetic. Each has its own mood fragrance by AI-guided perfumery EveryHuman<\/a> (welcome to Miami). Rooms all booked? Settle for a seat in the lobby on Robbie Williams\u2019 Introvert Chair, which the singer-songwriter created in collaboration with Moooi.<\/p>\n

Over the past few years, Miami started capitalizing on prime waterfront real estate along Biscayne Bay and the river. Direct your yacht to the buzziest opening of the season, Bagatelle Miami River<\/a>, which feels like a private villa in the South of France with chef Rocco Seminara (who cut his teeth with gastronomic greats like Alain Ducasse and Jo\u00ebl Robuchon) to thank for the French-Mediterranean cuisine. During Miami Art Week, sunset DJ sets with headliners like Jamie Jones and Chlo\u00e9 Caillet add to the St.-Tropez vibe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After treating yourself at Cartier\u2019s recently redesigned flagship in the Miami Design District<\/a>, whose wraparound fluted glass fa\u00e7ade is etched in a pattern inspired by a 1909 Cartier brooch, lunch in one of the neighborhood\u2019s newest restaurants: Milanese transplant La Specialit\u00e0<\/a>. Nearby, Mandolin Aegean Bistro<\/a> remains a standout, but reservations during Art Basel are harder than getting into some of the most anticipated parties. Same goes for raved-about newcomer Sunny\u2019s<\/a>. On Espa\u00f1ola Way, the Prohibition speakeasy-inspired Joyce<\/a> is one of the best tables to snag on South Beach, or you can try your luck in Little Haiti at celebrated sister spots Boia De<\/a> and Walrus Rodeo<\/a>, whose rich lamb rag\u00f9-stuffed lasagna is the comfort food you didn\u2019t know you needed.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re staying through the weekend, Montauk\u2019s Surf Lodge<\/a> is back with a Sunday series at the retro-chic Palm Tree Club Miami<\/a>, with German DJ Rampa headlining the Basel edition<\/a>. After dark, hold court in one of Downtown\u2019s intimate, music-filled spaces like Floyd Miami<\/a> or Jolene Sound Room<\/a>, or head over to the popular Wynwood listening bar Dante\u2019s HiFi<\/a>, where everyone from Anderson .Paak to Zo\u00eb Kravitz has been spotted.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re not ready for the party to end (and Miami is truly a city that never sleeps), make your way to the Miami Beach EDITION<\/a>, where David Lynch\u2019s subterranean Parisian members club Silencio<\/a> is taking over Basement<\/a> for three nights, from December 2-5. During the day, swing by the hotel\u2019s installation from Tom Ford Eyewear, where you can pick up a few of Haider Ackermann\u2019s off-the-runway frames\u2014some of which have never been available before in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Miami\u2019s building boom extends to its art scene, with galleries and museums setting up shop in developing neighborhoods like the Central American- and Caribbean-heavy Allapattah located west of Wynwood. It\u2019s here where locals Don and Mera Rubell\u2014who were responsible for bringing Art Basel to Miami Beach back in 2002\u2014relocated their personal contemporary collection into the Rubell Museum<\/a>, housed in a series of concrete-clad former industrial buildings.<\/p>\n

After browsing the 40 gallery spaces, cross the street to immersive art center Superblue<\/a> to stroll through mirrored mazes and photo murals before drifting through the KDR<\/a>-led gallery hub (including one of the originals, Mindy Solomon<\/a>), which Figueredo says is \u201cquietly becoming one of the city\u2019s sharpest contemporary circuits.\u201d After Miami\u2019s many dressed-up dining experiences, the laid-back and open-air Hometown Barbecue<\/a> is a welcome departure. You can\u2019t go wrong with the brisket, pit-smoked for nearly 16 hours and stuffed inside a sandwich roll or homemade taco tortilla\u2014or served in purist fashion by the half-pound with dill pickle chips.<\/p>\n

If you have the energy to squeeze in a workout, design-driven Revive Pilates<\/a> (where Romeo Beckham is said to make an appearance from time to time) is rapidly topping the list of Miami\u2019s ever-growing luxury reformer studios, with John Summit guest DJing during Miami Art Week. In Coral Gables, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson<\/a> just opened her first studio in the Southeast. Nearby, plush and palm-filled Coconut Grove, Miami\u2019s oldest neighborhood, is the perfect place when you need a break from socializing. It\u2019s easy to hide away at Mayfair House Hotel & Garden<\/a>, known for its art-filled spaces, slipping out for the occasional meal at newly opened Ava MediterrAegean<\/a> (from the same team behind Mila<\/a> and Casa Neos<\/a>, which will feature an Art Basel music collab with St. Tropez\u2019s Shellona<\/a>) or drinks at Carbone Vino<\/a>, the latest in chef Mario Carbone\u2019s culinary empire.<\/p>\n
