MIAMI \u2014 A man wanted in a decade-and-a-half-old Miami murder case was on the run in East Africa, authorities said. He was back in a South Florida courtroom Thursday morning after being extradited from Kenya.<\/p>\n
Deputies have since charged 34-year-old Nicolas Soares with second-degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon. <\/p>\n
The shooting in question took place in September 2010. <\/p>\n
According to an arrest warrant from the Miami Police Department, Soares, then 19, went to the home of Herbert Caniza with the intention of robbing him for money and marijuana. <\/p>\n
When Caniza opened his front door, police said Soares shot him in the chest before fleeing.<\/p>\n
Through investigative means, officers were able to determine that Soares had planned to rob the victim because he needed more money and marijuana to sell. <\/p>\n
Per Soares\u2019 arrest warrant, investigators were able to track down a witness who corroborated Soares\u2019 plan to rob the victim, the motive behind it and how he was able to obtain the firearm used in the crime.<\/p>\n
Additionally, detectives spoke to Soares\u2019 mother who told them that when her son contacted her, he said he was in danger and had to \u201curgently leave the area,\u201d according to an arrest form, so she booked travel for him to Brazil to stay with family. <\/p>\n
The arrest warrant for Soares was signed in March but he wasn\u2019t booked into jail until Wednesday. <\/p>\n
According to Miami police, the department worked with federal agencies to track Soares down to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, where he was arrested.<\/p>\n
Soares is currently behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he will remain on no bond. <\/p>\n
