PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. \u2013 Body-camera footage from Port St. Lucie Police Department gives some indication of the firefight that led to an officer and the suspect being shot.<\/a><\/p>\n

The agency says Sgt. Erik Levasseur is still in critical condition at an area hospital after the incident on SW Lake Park Drive, just west of I-95 and Tradition Parkway Monday evening.<\/p>\n

According to reporting by WPLG Local 10<\/a>, six officers from the agency were responding to an apparent neighbor dispute involving a mental health call, when they found the suspect holding what the police chief called an assault rifle.<\/p>\n

Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk said the suspect shot Levasseur in the face. There was an exchange of gunfire that could be heard in the video, but it is still unknown how much of the gunfire came from the suspect and how much was from the police response.<\/p>\n

The suspect was killed in the exchange, officials said.<\/p>\n

The gunfire can be heard in the body camera video, along with officers using a police vehicle for cover. An officer is then heard asking Levasseur if he was OK.<\/p>\n

Niemczyk said he was optimistic Levasseur will recover.<\/p>\n

The shooting comes just days after an Indian River County sheriff\u2019sdeputy was killed<\/a>and several others were injured while trying to serve an eviction notice at a home near Vero Beach.<\/p>\n
