PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PLSPD) is expected to give an update on Wednesday for one of its Sergeants who was shot in the face twice<\/a> while in the line of duty. <\/p>\n

According to PSLPD, the news conference will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Officers say they will provide an update on Sergeant Erik Levasseur’s condition and further information on the Town Park shooting.<\/p>\n

Long-time Port St. Lucie Sergeant LeVasseur was shot during a call in the Town Park community in Tradition. He was among six officers who responded<\/a> to a disturbance\u2014described by officials as a mental health-related neighbor dispute\u2014at a home. <\/p>\n

A man inside the house, armed with an assault rifle, opened fire on officers as they approached. That man was fatally shot in the exchange of gunfire, and Sergeant LeVasseur was injured. Officials stated LeVasseur was struck near his nose, thankfully avoiding any brain and spinal injuries.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday night, the police department said LeVasseur was in a medically induced coma <\/a>after he had to undergo a second surgery to repair his facial features. In addition the surgery, his jaw was wired shut for recovery and a tracheostomy was done to keep his airway secure. <\/p>\n
