PETERSBURG, Fla. \u2014 The City of St. Petersburg\u2019s Housing and Land Use Committee on Thursday held conversations around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/local\/pinellascounty\/lincoln-cemetery-re-annexation-gulfport-st-pete-council-meeting\/67-660e2d90-ef91-40ad-8c32-bb212c2f9448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">annexing the historically Black Lincoln Cemetery<\/a> in Gulfport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to stop pussyfooting around and to the right thing,\u201d Councilmember Corey Givens said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Givens, who has relatives buried in the cemetery, said annexation would be the right thing to do because the city de-annexed the cemetery without much reason decades ago, he said. The city kept the white cemetery directly across the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cemetery is believed to have veteran graves from the destroyed Moffett Cemetery that once existed under land now covered by I-175.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the construction of the interstate, historical news reports show crews found bones, but continued construction anyway. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Councilwoman Gina Driscoll made a motion during Thursday\u2019s meeting for the city attorney to create a resolution for council to possibly move forward with the annexation process of Lincoln.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a developing story.
