{"id":71349,"date":"2025-12-04T18:09:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T18:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/71349\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T18:09:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T18:09:06","slug":"slain-hollywood-officers-family-gives-emotional-statements-during-killers-death-penalty-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/71349\/","title":{"rendered":"Slain Hollywood officer\u2019s family gives emotional statements during killer\u2019s death penalty phase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  \u2014 The death penalty phase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/03\/jurors-see-fallen-officers-bloodied-shirt-as-they-weigh-whether-killer-should-get-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/03\/jurors-see-fallen-officers-bloodied-shirt-as-they-weigh-whether-killer-should-get-death-penalty\/\">for the man who pled guilty to killing a Hollywood police officer continued on Thursday<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">There were emotional statements made by family members of Officer Yandy Chirino that brought the courtroom to tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Their testimony wrapped much sooner than expected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Chirino responded to a call of \u201ca suspicious person checking for unlocked cars\u201d at about 10:30 p.m., on Oct. 17, 2021, on the 4000 block of North Hills Drive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He was shot by Jason Banegas while resisting arrest, according to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">During Thursday\u2019s hearing, Chirino\u2019s mother, father, and sister were too overcome with emotion to speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The court also heard from Banegas\u2019 girlfriend, who described the trauma of the night of the shooting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A statement from Chirinos sister Yaily Chirino was read aloud, describing how family moments that were once joyful now \u201ccarry an emptiness that overshadows everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The statement read, in part: <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhat happened to my brother did not just end his life, it fractured ours. A change who we are as individuals and as a family.
