\u201cIf it ain\u2019t broke, right?\u201d says Tampa Repertory Theatre<\/a> Managing Artistic Producer Jim Sorensen, who adapted and directs the company\u2019s radio-fied version of the Dickens classic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stage setup will feel very familiar to anyone who attended \u2018Wonderful Life\u2019<\/a> last year: a cozy \u2018radio theatre\u2019 vibe, complete with On Air and Applause signs, microphones, a piano and a couple of large foley tables, along with a Christmas tree or two. Emphasis on cozy. We\u2019ve expanded our foley repertoire this year, combing through the script to find almost any mentioned sound, and we\u2019ve even acquired a waterphone. Trust me that, even if you don\u2019t know what it is now, you\u2019ll LOVE it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast for \u2018A Christmas Carol\u2019 at TampaRep<\/p>\n

The cast is led by Michael Gregory as Scrooge, who shone as the curmudgeonly Mr. Potter in \u201cWonderful Life.\u201d Cameron Kubly, last year\u2019s George Bailey, plays Scrooge\u2019s nephew and the Ghost of Christmas Present. Other cast members include Alix Faulhaber (who co-starred memorably with Sorensen in The Off-Central\u2019s \u201cBakersfield Mist\u201d earlier this season), Keith Batchelor Jr., Max Carley, and Sydney Leary. The music and most of the sound effects will be handled by Juan Rodriguez, the Best of the Bay-winning music director<\/a> for the TampaRep musicals \u201cNext to Normal\u201d <\/a>and \u201cThe Bridges of Madison County.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose my favorite parts of the story,\u201d says Sorensen. \u201cNone of the other adaptations I\u2019m familiar with include all the specific passages that we\u2019ll be using.\u201d A veteran of eight separate productions in five different versions of \u201cCarol,\u201d he knows whereof he adapts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely \u2018A Christmas Carol\u2019\u2014a ghost story with snarky Dickens humor and the beautiful story of redemption.\u201d<\/p>\n
