Concern for caregivers<\/p>\n
Families live with fear and uncertainty as cruel immigration policies terrify the caregivers who hold our communities together. From child care providers to home health aides, immigrant caregivers play an essential role.<\/p>\n
Yet instead of investing in care and stability, Republican members of Congress are cutting health care, nutrition and child care and funneling billions of tax dollars to fund separating families and terrorizing immigrant caregivers.<\/p>\n
Caregivers allow parents to work, for children to learn and grow, and for older adults to live with dignity.<\/p>\n
When trusted workers are torn from their jobs and families, the ripple effects are devastating. Children lose beloved teachers, patients lose consistent care, and families lose the stability that keeps them afloat.<\/p>\n
Our nation needs a safe, orderly immigration process that balances compassion and security and ensures that our immigrant caregivers are treated with dignity and respect \u2014 not cuts to programs, and not cruelty.<\/p>\n

Faith for a better world<\/p>\n
As we enter into full holiday season energy, once again I am filled with hope and faith for a better world, a better country, and that truth will always prevail. Some say that is impossible, wishful thinking, and that our future, especially with our divided country, appears bleak. But, I disagree. People are always nicer, friendlier, kinder (and will often let you merge into I-4 traffic) at this time of year. My vision is that those good feelings will stretch beyond the holiday season and that behaving kindly while wearing a friendly smile will become automatic, not thought about, and a daily habit.<\/p>\n
The motto of my local police department is \u201cOutdo one another with honor.\u201d It originates from the Bible in Romans 12:10 where the apostle Paul says, \u201cLove one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.\u201d Especially at this time of the year, when we start to create resolutions for a more positive and successful New Year, that specific passage has always encouraged me to start fresh, always resolving to \u201cdo better and be better.\u201d My dream is that \u201cshowing honor\u201d will start at the top, with the leaders of our country and that their honesty, compassion, and excellence will set an example that will rain down on us all like a Florida summer storm.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to nominate Scott Maxwell as Orlando\u2019s and maybe Florida\u2019s CEO \u2014 Chief Expose Officer. His columns continue to uncover situations that we need to know and be aware of. He thoroughly explains who is working behind the curtain to hide and deceive the citizens of our local communities and state.<\/p>\n
My only complaint is why others don\u2019t see what is happening and do something about it. Politicians get slaps on the wrist and go on about their business of wrongdoing as if it\u2019s okay. Charter schools still receive money with no accountability. Public schools lose money and are then told to provide and pay for services to allow charter schools to use their facilities. There is too much corruption in our state government and Scott Maxwell continually tries to keep us aware of what is happening and who is behind it. Kudos to him and the Orlando Sentinel for being brave enough to publish these exposes.<\/p>\n
