{"id":74445,"date":"2025-12-07T13:34:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T13:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/74445\/"},"modified":"2025-12-07T13:34:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T13:34:07","slug":"hialeah-voters-head-to-polls-as-city-commission-runoffs-test-new-mayors-political-clout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/74445\/","title":{"rendered":"Hialeah voters head to polls as City Commission runoffs test new Mayor\u2019s political clout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hialeahfl.gov\/DocumentCenter\/View\/20914\/2025---City-of-Hialeah-Early-Voting---English?bidId=\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Early voting is underway<\/a> in Hialeah as two Council runoff contests will decide who rounds out a markedly different dais at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Group 3 and Group 4 races \u2014 featuring Jessica Castillo versus Gelien Perez and William \u201cWilly\u201d Marrero versus Javier Morejon, respectively \u2014 also stand to determine whether new Mayor Bryan Calvo gains early influence over the Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Perez and Castillo advanced to the Group 3 runoff in <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/763938-2-elected-to-hialeah-council-as-2-other-races-head-to-runoffs\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">last month\u2019s General Election<\/a> with 40.5% and 36% of the vote, respectively, leaving one third-place candidate behind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Group 4, Marrero narrowly led the field with 24.8%, followed by Morejon at 23.3%. They outpaced three others in the contest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To win outright, a candidate had to capture more than half the vote in their respective races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The runoffs present one of the first real tests of how much sway Calvo, who <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/763916-hialeah-voters-pick-bryan-calvo-as-first-new-elected-mayor-in-5-years\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">made history<\/a> last month as the youngest person ever elected Hialeah Mayor, will have as he prepares to take office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/hialeah\/article312949055.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">He has endorsed<\/a> Perez and Marrero \u2014 a strategic pairing that blends rival factions from the mayoral contest into his new governing coalition. Both ran with political slates opposing him. He told the Miami Herald last month that he\u2019s aiming to create \u201ca coalition to approve the agenda,\u201d without an expectation that Perez and Matteo \u201cwill vote with (him) 100% of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If both candidates win, Calvo could enter January with a working majority on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hialeahfl.gov\/435\/City-Council\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">seven-member Council<\/a> and greater control over the upcoming appointment to fill Jesus Tundidor\u2019s soon-to-be-vacant seat. Tundidor ran unsuccessfully for Mayor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Group 3, Perez, 35, a former city Human Resources Director and one-time mayoral aide, has campaigned on supporting first responders and small businesses, improving infrastructure and parks, expanding senior services and rejecting millage rate increases.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But her tenure as HR director drew scrutiny: a two-year Miami-Dade ethics investigation found employees under her influence received sizable raises while she acted as their real estate agent. Images via the candidates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Castillo, 37, has run as an independent voice focused on transparency, accountability, traffic relief, infrastructure upgrades and lower taxes. She has kept her campaign largely offline, with no website and minimal social media activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Group 4, Marrero, 23, a Florida International University public administration student and former Council aide, has emphasized affordability, issues facing working families and seniors, and support for first responders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier this year, three Council members attempted to appoint him to the same seat he now seeks, but opposition from others <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/738126-hialeah-council-gridlocked-over-vacancy-as-deadline-looms\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">blocked the move<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Willy-Morrero-Javier-Morejon.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-768661 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Willy-Morrero-Javier-Morejon-640x360.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>(L-R) William \u201cWilly\u201d Marrero and Javier Morejon aim to take the City Council\u2019s Group 4 seat. Images via LinkedIn and Javier Morejon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Morejon, 34, a land-use specialist with an extensive volunteer r\u00e9sum\u00e9, is running on infrastructure repairs, government transparency, beautification and reducing the cost of city services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Election Day is Monday, Dec. 9.
