{"id":7583,"date":"2025-10-17T01:39:32","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T01:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/7583\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T01:39:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T01:39:32","slug":"broward-mayor-pushes-back-after-sheriff-accuses-commission-of-shortchanging-public-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/7583\/","title":{"rendered":"Broward mayor pushes back after sheriff accuses commission of shortchanging public safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.  \u2014 Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony tossed his latest bomb in writing \u2014 an op-ed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/2025\/10\/16\/broward-countys-public-safety-is-not-just-a-line-item-gregory-tony\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/2025\/10\/16\/broward-countys-public-safety-is-not-just-a-line-item-gregory-tony\/\">Sun Sentinel<\/a> suggesting the county commission is shortchanging public safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Broward County Mayor Beam Furr says that\u2019s simply not the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt is our highest priority,\u201d Furr said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to Furr, public safety takes up more than half of the county\u2019s entire budget \u2014 and he said the sheriff has received major support in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve bought helicopters, we made huge increases on dispatch \u2014 a lot of things to make sure that he could work out,\u201d Furr said. \u201cHe said essentially he thought this year it was his turn to kind of give.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The sheriff initially requested about 50% more funding \u2014 a proposal the commission didn\u2019t even consider.
