TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 “See you in court,” a Muslim civil rights organization and its Florida chapter said in response to the governor’s terrorist designation.<\/p>\n
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday designated one of the largest Muslim<\/a> civil rights and advocacy groups in the U.S. a \u201cforeign terrorist organization,\u201d following a similar step by Texas last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n The directive against the Council on American-Islamic Relations comes in an executive order DeSantis posted on the social media site X. It also gives the same label to the Muslim Brotherhood<\/a>.<\/p>\n Neither CAIR nor the Muslim Brotherhood is designated as<\/a> a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government.<\/p>\n The order instructs Florida agencies to prevent the two groups and those who have provided them material support from receiving contracts, employment and funds from a state executive or cabinet agency.<\/p>\n Through a joint statement, CAIR and CAIR-Florida responded to DeSantis, stating<\/a>: “Ron DeSantis is an Israel First politician who wants to smear and silence Americans, especially American Muslims, critical of U.S. support for Israel\u2019s war crimes.”<\/p>\n “Governor DeSantis knows full well that CAIR-Florida is an American civil rights organization,” CAIR and its Florida chapter stated. “We look forward to defeating Governor DeSantis\u2019 latest Israel First stunt in a court of law, where facts matter and conspiracy theories have no weight.”<\/p>\n In an emailed statement to the Associated Press, CAIR and its Florida chapter said the organization plans to sue DeSantis in response to what it called an \u201cunconstitutional\u201d and \u201cdefamatory\u201d proclamation.<\/p>\n EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY<\/p>\n Florida is designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist organizations. \u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) December 8, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n Founded in 1994, CAIR has 25 chapters around the country.<\/p>\n CAIR last month asked a federal judge to strike down Texas Gov. Greg Abbott\u2019s proclamation, saying in a lawsuit<\/a> that it was \u201cnot only contrary to the United States Constitution, but finds no support in any Texas law.\u201d<\/p>\n
