ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Narcoossee Road, a vital north-south corridor straddling Orange and Osceola counties, has become a daily nightmare for thousands of drivers. Once a manageable suburban route, it\u2019s now overwhelmed by traffic volumes beyond its design capacity\u2014leaving residents frustrated and desperate for relief.<\/p>\n
Locals say the congestion has steadily worsened over the past few years. <\/p>\n
Sharon, who\u2019s lived in the area for five years, summed it up simply.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not fun. All day, every minute, it doesn\u2019t matter. Every hour,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Jack Goodwin, another commuter, described the unpredictability of the road.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes you\u2019ll get a break, but even still, it\u2019s at least 30 minutes to go about seven miles,\u201d Goodwin said. \u201cUsually it\u2019s 45.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, that number has surged to more than 58,000\u2014exceeding the road\u2019s intended capacity of 55,000 cars per day. <\/p>\n According to Mighk Wilson of MetroPlan Orlando, the road\u2019s design hasn\u2019t kept pace with the rapid development in Southeast Orange and Northern Osceola counties. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a typical suburban six-lane arterial,\u201d Wilson said, \u201cbut it\u2019s seen an exceptional amount of growth in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n Drivers have taken to social media to vent their frustrations, calling the situation \u201cabsolutely horrible\u201d and blaming poor planning and unsynchronized traffic lights. <\/p>\n MetroPlan Orlando did attempt to optimize traffic signals along the corridor, but the results were minimal. During evening peak hours, drive times were reduced by just 36 seconds. In the morning rush, they actually increased by six seconds\u2014leaving drivers unimpressed and still stuck in gridlock.<\/p>\n Unlike other congested roads in Central Florida, such as Colonial Drive and John Young Parkway, Narcoossee may have a glimmer of hope. A new toll road\u2014State Road 534\u2014is in the works to provide an alternate route.
