PORT ST. LUCIE \u2013 A park which has been in planning for more than a decade finally became one step closer to reality as elected officials, residents and city staff celebrated the ground breaking of Torino Regional Park.<\/p>\n
According to a media release from city staff, at its completion, Torino Regional Park will encompass 195-acres and will include amenities that residents asked for in planning meetings the city held. Those amenities include a playground with nature-themed play structures, an interactive splash pad, pickleball courts, covered basketball courts, covered pavilions, walking and biking trails, a future skate park, and ample green space for events and leisure.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur residents have told us they want more access to green spaces \u2013 places where families can come together, neighbors can connect and everyone can enjoy the vibrant beauty of our community,\u201d said Mayor Shannon Martin. \u201cTorino Regional Park will be exactly that: a space designed for connection, activity and enjoyment of the outdoors that make Port St. Lucie such a special place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n
A skate park has been one of the most requested amenities by city residents since a previous park closed in 2010. The new skate park was designed by Mark McIntyre, president and founder of Action Sports Design, one of the country\u2019s most notable designers. McIntyre\u2019s company has previously worked on professional skateboarder Tony Hawk\u2019s personal skate park.<\/p>\n
Local resident Pedro Urbaez, who lives in property adjacent to the park, is most excited about the walking trails. \u201cI told my wife she will see me walking here every day.\u201d Urbaez is also excited to bring his grandchildren to the park when they visit from New York. \u201cWe needed some place like this here. It is so close, we will be able to walk over here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs construction begins, we know this park will create meaningful spaces for recreation, activity, and connection,\u201d Martin said. \u201cTorino Regional Park will take its place as a signature destination in the Heart of the Treasure Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another park, Tradition Regional Park, is currently under construction with a potential completion date in 2026. Martin said in a previous Facebook post that the city will have the world\u2019s first adaptive all-wheel park, which is also designed by Action Sports. \u201cTradition Regional Park will be the first adaptive all-wheel park in the world, opening next year! If it has wheels, you can use it.\u201d<\/p>\n
