DELRAY BEACH, Fla. \u2013 This week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took to the podium to advocate for changing the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n
DeSantis gave a keynote address at a \u201cTerm Limits Summit<\/a>\u201d in Delray Beach, pushing state legislators from around the country to support a new amendment that sets up congressional term limits.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople are so frustrated with what goes on in Congress,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd honestly, yeah, Republicans may be less frustrated when it\u2019s Republicans. Democrats may be less if it\u2019s Dems. But I don\u2019t think anyone\u2019s really happy with just how the modern Congress operates.\u201d<\/p>\n During his speech, DeSantis argued that Congress members\u2019 \u201cincentives\u201d need to change from focusing on reelection to focusing on effective legislation.<\/p>\n \u201cI think if you had term limits, I think people would go on a mission. They know they\u2019re gonna be there for six years in the House,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd maybe they run for Senate. But even if not, man, you\u2019re going to want to have something to show for it.” <\/p>\n Earlier this year, DeSantis made similar calls when he visited lawmakers in Ohio<\/a> to discuss the issue for a proposed amendment.<\/p>\n Tonight, I joined @USTermLimits<\/a> to urge legislators from around the country to back efforts to adopt a U.S. constitutional amendment establishing congressional term limits.<\/p>\n Congress is simply no longer working for the American people and is incredibly unpopular. Unfortunately,\u2026 pic.twitter.com\/BhpzA2rP8A<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) December 12, 2025<\/a> <\/p>\n Last year, Florida lawmakers passed a resolution (HCR 693<\/a>) with that same aim in mind.<\/p>\n While term limits have been established in Florida and 22 other states, that\u2019s not the case at the federal level.<\/p>\n That\u2019s because of a 1995 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, which posited that congressional term limits may only be imposed if the U.S. Constitution is amended. <\/p>\n [POLL: What do you think?]<\/p>\n To do so, two-thirds of the states can request a convention to propose such an amendment, though it would have to be ratified by at least 38 states before it could take effect.<\/p>\n That said, DeSantis said that it might not even take that many states to get Congress to take action.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, what would happen if you got to 31, 32 states? I mean, Congress would end up passing it,\u201d DeSantis posited. \u201cI think they would want to control, and I think what they would do is probably pass what we want, but they would just say, \u2018All current members are not subject to it until a certain time or new people are elected.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n As of now, only 12 states \u2014 Florida, Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin \u2014 have passed resolutions in both houses of their Legislatures, calling for a U.S. Term Limits Convention<\/a>.<\/p>\n [BELOW: Florida Gov.
