JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 Jacksonville City councilmembers held a public meeting to discuss a resolution recommending that any future pre-trial detention facility replacing or supplementing the John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Center not be located in neighborhoods marked \u201cHazardous\u201d (Grade \u201cD\u201d) on the 1937\u20131940 Home Owners\u2019 Loan Corporation Residential Security Maps.<\/p>\n
The resolution highlights the city\u2019s commitment to environmental justice and equitable development by excluding historically redlined areas from site selection.<\/p>\n
It builds on a 2024 council resolution acknowledging the lasting effects of redlining on neighborhoods such as LaVilla, Durkeeville, and Mixon Town.<\/p>\n
Councilmember Peluso, who presided over the public meeting, acknowledged the limits of his four-year term but stressed the importance of recognizing past injustices and listening to community concerns. <\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t promise I can fix everything… but I want to be present and listening,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Council Member Matt Carlucci praised Peluso\u2019s dedication, noting he is \u201cworking extra cylinders to get the job done.\u201d<\/p>\n
