The play has been described as a spiritual successor to Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, and will play in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater as part of the Arsht Theater Up Close season from Jan. 8 to 25, 2026.

Tickets to The Inheritance, Part 1 are $67-73 and may be purchased now at arshtcenter.org or at the Arsht box office by calling 305-949-6722.

Zoetic Stage’s production of The Inheritance, Part 1 is generously supported by the Warten Foundation and OurFund.

“Having the opportunity to bring this magnificent piece of theater to the South Florida community is thrilling,” said Zoetic Stage artistic director Stuart Meltzer. “Matthew López wrote a masterpiece exploring generations of gay men and the legacies that each leaves behind. Written exquisitely with bravery, beauty and bravado, The Inheritance Part 1 promises to be a theatrical event that will long be remembered.”

Winner of both the Tony Award and Olivier Award for Best Play, Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award for Outstanding Play, and Critic’s Circle Award for Outstanding New Broadway Play, Matthew López’s two-part epic tells the story of three generations of gay men in New York navigating love, loss and legacy in the wake of the AIDS epidemic. The play was inspired by E. M. Forster’s novel Howards End, which told the story of three families navigating social constructs, class and relationships in turn-of-the-century England.

López reimagines the story with gay men from different generations standing in for Forster’s straight people from different classes.

The production has an all-gay cast featuring award-winning actors from South Florida and New York, including Alex Weisman, Anthony Michael Martinez, Michael McKeever, Tom Wahl, Aidan Paul, Imran Hylton, Alberto Blanco, Caio Ferreira Santos, Sam Lantz, Randall Swinton, Larry Toyter and Angel Dominguez.

Matthew López was and raised in Panama City, FL, and attended the University of South Florida in Tampa. He is the first Latino writer to win the Tony Award for Best Play. In 2023, he was nominated for a Tony Award for co-writing the book for the musical Some Like It Hot, which was the most-nominated musical that season. He made his feature directing debut with the movie adaptation of the popular novel Red, White and Royal Blue, which spent several weeks at No. 1 on Amazon Prime.

About Zoetic Stage
Zoetic Stage was founded in 2010 to create fresh, bold interpretations of contemporary plays and musicals, and is dedicated to enhancing South Florida’s national artistic profile by producing regional premieres and developing new works to become part of the American stage repertoire.

In 2020, Zoetic Stage was named the Best Theater Company by the Miami New Times.
