Thanks to your advocacy, we\u2019re seeing movement in Tallahassee.\u00a0Over the past several months, your calls, emails, and local organizing have made it impossible for lawmakers to ignore the real-world consequences of\u00a0Senate Bill 180<\/a>,<\/a>\u00a0the sweeping law passed in the 2025 legislative session that freezes meaningful local planning efforts through October 2027 and sharply limits what communities can do post-hurricanes. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Because of your efforts, legislators have been forced to take a closer look at the law and begin correcting its most damaging provisions. Yesterday brought an important development.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Senator Nick DiCeglie (Pinellas), the original bill sponsor of 2025\u2019s SB 180, filed\u00a0SB 840<\/a>, a bill intended to correct some of last year\u2019s overreach.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what\u00a0SB 840<\/a>\u00a0would do:<\/p>\n

Narrow SB 180\u2019s scope going forward\u00a0so its restrictions apply only to properties actually damaged by a storm.<\/p>\n

Reduce the threat of lawsuits\u00a0against local governments by removing much of the automatic litigation exposure created under SB 180.<\/p>\n

Shorten the freeze on adopting \u201cmore restrictive or burdensome\u201d planning policies, moving the end date from\u00a0October 1, 2027\u00a0to\u00a0June 30, 2026.<\/p>\n

Leaves intact the retroactive provisions of SB 180, which remain a major concern for communities still navigating those impacts.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This bill is an encouraging first step, and we appreciate Senator DiCeglie for bringing it forward in good faith. But there is\u00a0still more work to do\u00a0to fully restore local planning authority and protect Florida\u2019s communities from the sweeping effects of SB 180.<\/p>\n
