{"id":85072,"date":"2025-12-16T10:21:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T10:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/85072\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T10:21:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T10:21:17","slug":"this-is-the-worst-stretch-of-florida-for-sinkholes-data-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/85072\/","title":{"rendered":"This is the worst stretch of Florida for sinkholes, data shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 Any long-time residents of the Sunshine State are likely all too familiar with sinkholes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">They\u2019re a relatively common staple of Florida, thanks to the fact that the state sits on a bedrock made up mainly of limestone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">And because of how porous limestone is, water can seep in and eat away at this layer, forming cracks that eventually cause the ground itself to collapse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/floridadep.gov\/fgs\/sinkholes\/content\/sinkhole-faq#G4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/floridadep.gov\/fgs\/sinkholes\/content\/sinkhole-faq#G4\">nowhere in the state<\/a> is immune to sinkholes, Central Florida tends to see them form much more often, leading to the region being dubbed \u201cSinkhole Alley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt goes all the way from Hillsborough County, and close to Tampa, all the way up to Daytona, and it goes through our areas of Maitland and Winter Park,\u201d UCF\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cece.ucf.edu\/person\/manoj-chopra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cece.ucf.edu\/person\/manoj-chopra\/\">Dr. Manoj Chopra<\/a> told News 6 last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">[BELOW: Deadly Central Florida sinkhole is also the deepest]<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, experts at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/earth-systems\/blog\/tell-me-about-sinkholes-in-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu\/earth-systems\/blog\/tell-me-about-sinkholes-in-florida\/\">the University of Florida<\/a> say that more sinkholes have been forming in recent years due to factors like climate change and land development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In fact, a 300-foot-deep sinkhole opened up beneath a Central Florida fertilizer plant back in 2016, which reportedly sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/national\/2024\/10\/09\/polluted-waste-from-floridas-fertilizer-industry-is-in-the-path-of-miltons-fury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/national\/2024\/10\/09\/polluted-waste-from-floridas-fertilizer-industry-is-in-the-path-of-miltons-fury\/\">millions of gallons of contaminated sludge<\/a> into the state\u2019s main drinking water aquifer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">When it comes to sinkholes, the Florida Geological Society breaks down the state <a href=\"https:\/\/geodata.dep.state.fl.us\/datasets\/FDEP::florida-sinkhole-types\/explore?location=28.933386%2C-81.853557%2C7.59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/geodata.dep.state.fl.us\/datasets\/FDEP::florida-sinkhole-types\/explore?location=28.933386%2C-81.853557%2C7.59\">into four main types of areas<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>AreaDescriptionSinkholes?CitiesIBare or thinly covered limestoneFew, generally being shallow, wide and happening over timeMiami, Hollywood, HialeahIIConsists mainly of permeable sandFew, generally being shallow, small and happening over timeFt. As it turns out, the worst stretch of sinkholes in the state is in west-Central Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/fl.water.usgs.gov\/PDF_files\/cir1182_tihansky.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/fl.water.usgs.gov\/PDF_files\/cir1182_tihansky.pdf\">where large amounts of karst limestone<\/a> can be found below ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">[You can find the full map <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapTools\/index.html?appid=404f2e8dbde44c2baff4a53175e278e7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapTools\/index.html?appid=404f2e8dbde44c2baff4a53175e278e7\">here<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Within Central Florida, places like Orlando\u2019s Lake Eola and Winter Park\u2019s Lake Rose actually got their starts as sinkholes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Chopra told News 6 that there\u2019s an easy way to tell whether a lake in Florida began as a sinkhole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIf you fly over Central Florida, if you see those really round lakes, they\u2019re probably sinkholes, because a sinkhole is typically a funnel that fails the surface and falls in,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>A massive sinkhole opens up in Winter Park in 1981, eventually forming into Lake Rose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">There are also two primary types of sinkholes to watch out for, <a href=\"https:\/\/publicfiles.dep.state.fl.us\/FGS\/FGS_Publications\/L\/L20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/publicfiles.dep.state.fl.us\/FGS\/FGS_Publications\/L\/L20.pdf\">state officials warn<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Cover-Subsidence Sinkholes: These form slowly and occur when surface sediments settle or wash into a void. (Florida Department of Environmental Protection)<\/p>\n<p>Cover-Collapse Sinkholes: These form by the sudden collapse of cover sediments into a large void in the limestone bedrock beneath the surface.
