Getty Images for Ruinart<\/p>\n<p>Buckman\u2019s show \u2014 named after the Leonard Cohen song \u201cWho By Fire,\u201d an adaptation of a Yom Kippur prayer \u2014 features intimate portraits of her family and friends and focuses on the \u201cimportance of Jewish community,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese works look at the complicated relationship to the idea of the Home for myself and my people \u2014 at belonging, safety, resilience and joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The series features a familiar face, with \u201cGirls\u201d star Jemima Kirke done in acrylic and embroidery on vintage textile.<\/p>\n<p>The show features friends like \u201cGirls\u201d star Jemima Kirke. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJemima is absolutely part of my Jewish community and there are two portraits I\u2019ve made of her in the series\u201d Buckman, who was formerly married to \u201cFriends\u201d star David Schwimmer,  tells us. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Buckman explains that her now former gallery told her that the show \u201cwas indefinitely canceled because apparently they wanted to spare me \u2018potential hostility\u2019 and \u2018wait for a time that London is less antisemitic\u2019 to show my work.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough photographs of family and community members in intimate, domestic spaces, often within their own homes<br \/>\nBuckman considers the fragility of sanctuary and belonging,\u201d reads a release on the show. Courtesy Zoe Buckman<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cultural boycotts and efforts to censor Jewish artists in all creative fields serves to remove our narratives and presence from the canon of art history, thus removing and denying our lived experiences,\u201d Buckman tells Page Six. \u201cJust like Holocaust denialism, there is a real effort right now to diminish and gaslight the realities of our persecution and also the strength of our joy, creativity, and resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cIf anything I want this series to say that we are here\u2026that you can take us off the wall and try to hide us because we\u2019re not going anywhere. Courtesy Zoe Buckman<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have more faith in audiences and curators than my former gallery,\u201d she tells us. <\/p>\n<p>Her work has appeared in over seven museums this year including the National Portrait Gallery in London, SFMoMA, the Neues Museum in Germany and Crystal Bridges in Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been working largely with non-Jewish curators and institutions and they seem able to see myself and my work in our totality,\u201d she tells us, saying the antisemitism she has experienced, \u201cbrought into sharper focus the value of true community and fortified for me the importance of my continuing to make this work and keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her work has appeared in several museums this year. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Next year, her video work \u201cShow Me Your Bruises, Then,\u201d which explores intimate violence in relationships, will be on view at the Perez Museum. <\/p>\n<p>The work is a performance of a long form poem read by Buckman and actresses Sienna Miller and Cush Jumbo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her Miami, Fla., show runs through Jan. 10. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Artist Zoe Buckman is getting the last word.
