{"id":85932,"date":"2025-12-16T22:47:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T22:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/85932\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T22:47:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T22:47:06","slug":"fort-lauderdale-delays-vote-on-removing-las-olas-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/85932\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Lauderdale delays vote on removing Las Olas trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fort Lauderdale\u2019s long-awaited decision on whether to eliminate the tree-lined median on Las Olas Boulevard will have to wait until after the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>City commissioners were expected to debate the controversial proposal during their 1:30 p.m. meeting on Tuesday, but ran out of time.<\/p>\n<p>They now plan to take up the matter after the holidays on Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<p>The city has spent more than five years discussing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/2025\/12\/15\/should-las-olas-trees-stay-or-go-fort-lauderdale-expected-to-decide-tuesday\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dramatic redesign<\/a> of Las Olas that calls for the removal of the tree-lined median to make way for wider sidewalks and outdoor cafes.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have spent years arguing the trees give Las Olas its charm and should be left alone.<\/p>\n<p>Several residents were prepared to make that argument again Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Four blocks of olive trees planted decades ago currently line the median on Las Olas. All would be taken out under the redesign.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the estimated cost of the plan was approaching $200 million.
