It made the goodbye official after news broke back in August, when the restaurant confirmed it would not renew its lease. The restaurant occupies a former Standard Oil gas station, designed in 1954 by architect Robert Law Weed, a glass-heavy, mid-century structure that later became one of the neighborhood’s most recognizable landmarks.

Soyka opened Andiamo one year after launching Soyka across the street, helping establish this stretch of Biscayne Boulevard as a destination well before the current development boom. Inside, Andiamo built a following around thin-crust pizzas, simple salads, and a casual dining room built for regulars rather than hype.

For locals, Andiamo wasn’t just for special occasions; it was a constant. It even won New Times‘ Best Pizza award in 2002 and again in 2020, decades later. Talk about an accomplishment.

From the August Announcement to the Final Date

The news first broke in August, when the restaurant confirmed it would close once its lease expired. At the time, there was no exact last day. The team said it would continue operating through the fall and into the end of the year.

This latest update leaves no room for doubt. In a follow-up comment, the restaurant acknowledged the moment with humor, noting that a planned song had not been posted and joking that a moment of silence would have to suffice instead.

Loyal fans flooded the comments instantly, sharing memories, planning last visits, and asking if Andiamo might reopen elsewhere. No relocation plans have been announced.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. The shift from brick-oven pizza to burgers and shakes signals just another shift along Biscayne Boulevard, where classic, independent restaurants are increasingly giving way to high-volume concepts.

Preservation advocates have said the building itself will remain intact. Plans include maintaining its architectural character and restoring original signage.

Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza. 5600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami; 305-762-5751; andiamopizzamiami.com.
