Shahin Alam, a doctoral student at Florida State University,\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0his dedication to civil engineering through his dissertation on hydraulic elements within the St. Johns River Basin.<\/p>\n

During his time at FSU,\u00a0Alam\u00a0has actively participated in leadership and service projects that\u00a0enhance\u00a0academic\u00a0achievement, professional\u00a0growth\u00a0and increased student involvement.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0the mentorship of\u00a0civil and environmental engineering professor\u00a0Gang Chen<\/a>,\u00a0Alam\u00a0studies\u00a0local\u00a0water\u00a0to quantify\u00a0its\u00a0nutrient dynamics.\u00a0He also assesses the flow of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water and\u00a0monitors\u00a0potential contaminants\u00a0such\u00a0as\u00a0microplastics, nutrient pollutions and PFAS, which are \u201cper- and polyfluoroalkyl substances\u201d that do not break down easily in the environment.<\/p>\n

Alam\u2019s dissertation\u00a0addresses\u00a0water quality\u00a0challenges faced by many Florida\u00a0communities\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the key purpose and motivation behind his research.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0president of\u00a0the\u00a0Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEEGSA)<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0a representative for his college in the\u00a0Congress\u00a0of\u00a0Graduate\u00a0Students,\u00a0\u00a0Alam\u00a0connects with fellow engineers to\u00a0support their professional development, organize events and boost\u00a0interdisciplinary\u00a0networking\u00a0opportunities.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose Florida State University?<\/p>\n

I chose to attend FSU because of its strong interdisciplinary focus on environmental and water resources engineering, which aligns with my research interests in emerging contaminants such as PFAS\u00a0and microplastics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

FSU\u2019s collaborative research environment and access to\u00a0advanced\u00a0resources provide a platform to combine\u00a0data-driven modeling, environmental\u00a0chemistry\u00a0and sustainability science\u00a0to address critical global water contamination issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What academic achievements have you\u00a0accomplished\u00a0at FSU?<\/p>\n

One of my most significant academic accomplishments at FSU\u00a0was leading\u00a0a comprehensive, data-driven research project on\u00a0how nutrients move and change\u00a0in the St. Johns River Basin.\u00a0This work\u00a0provided\u00a0new insights into how urbanization, agricultural\u00a0activities\u00a0and tidal processes jointly influence nitrogen and phosphorus movement throughout coastal watersheds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another major accomplishment involves my research on PFAS\u00a0and microplastics.\u00a0My dissertation combines machine learning, deep\u00a0learning\u00a0and watershed modeling.\u00a0This makes\u00a0me one of the few\u00a0students\u00a0who\u00a0merges\u00a0AI with environmental science\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0FAMU-FSU College of Engineering<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

How do you serve the FSU community?<\/p>\n

During my time at FSU, I\u00a0have been involved\u00a0in leadership and service initiatives that promote academic excellence, professional\u00a0development\u00a0and student engagement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As\u00a0president of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Graduate Student Association (CEEGSA), I organized and led\u00a0numerous\u00a0events, including the annual CEEGSA Professional Conference, research and career networking sessions\u00a0and\u00a0student orientation programs.\u00a0I also\u00a0hosted\u00a0social activities such as bowling and billiards nights to strengthen connections among students,\u00a0faculty\u00a0and external partners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve\u00a0also\u00a0served\u00a0as the Congress of Graduate Students (COGS)\u00a0representative for the\u00a0FAMU-FSU\u00a0College of Engineering, where I advocate for graduate student funding,\u00a0research travel\u00a0grants\u00a0and\u00a0equitable\u00a0resource distribution.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These leadership experiences\u00a0strengthened\u00a0my skills\u00a0in collaboration,\u00a0communication\u00a0and\u00a0organizational management\u00a0outside\u00a0the classroom.\u00a0<\/p>\n

How does your work at FSU\u00a0impact\u00a0Florida\u2019s\u00a0communities?<\/p>\n

My work at FSU\u00a0has contributed to\u00a0both\u00a0academic\u00a0and local communities through a combination of research,\u00a0leadership\u00a0and outreach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a\u00a0doctoral\u00a0researcher in\u00a0civil and\u00a0environmental\u00a0engineering, my studies on PFAS, microplastics and nutrient pollution in Florida\u2019s river systems directly address regional water quality challenges.\u00a0By collaborating with local and state agencies,\u00a0including the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, I\u00a0help\u00a0advance data-driven understanding of contamination patterns in the St. Johns River Basin\u00a0to protect Florida\u2019s water resources and ecosystems.\u00a0<\/p>\n
