Ahead of his final days<\/a> in office, outgoing Miami Mayor Francis Suarez<\/a> penned an editorial in the Miami Herald to reflect on his eight-year tenure<\/a>.<\/p>\n In the piece titled\u00a0\u201cMayor Suarez: I leave behind a global city and a safer Miami,\u201d<\/a> Suarez highlighted some of the city\u2019s accomplishments under his watch, rather than the many lowlights that\u00a0New Times\u00a0has\u00a0covered. He cited the city\u2019s population growth, employment rates that lagged the national average, record-low city taxes, the creation of child savings accounts for kindergartners, expanded affordable housing, public safety reaching \u201chistoric highs,\u201d and Miami\u2019s emergence as a global city.<\/p>\n \u201cAs I close this chapter, I do so with gratitude, humility, and pride,\u201d he wrote. \u201cMiami\u2019s future has never been brighter \u2014 not because of any one leader, but because this city chose to believe in itself. That belief \u2014 Miami for everyone \u2014 is the legacy I leave behind, and the promise I know this city will continue to keep.\u201d<\/p>\n Suarez\u2019s editorial found itself on the brutally honest r\/Miami subreddit, and let\u2019s just say Miami residents are ready to slam the door shut on the Suarez chapter. <\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\tWill you step up to support New Times this year?\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAt New Times, we\u2019re small and scrappy \u2014 and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. If you\u2019ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now\u2019s the time to give back.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Here\u2019s a sampling of what some Reddit users had to say about the term-limited mayor and his actions over the last eight years:<\/p>\n \u201cHow long before he pops out with a cushy \u2018consultant job\u2019 at some Saudi wealth fund?\u201d a comment reads. \u201cOr will they dump him once he\u2019s not mayor anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019ll end up in the maga regime in short order,\u201d another responded.<\/p>\n \u201cFuck that guy,\u201d one chimed in.<\/p>\n A Reddit user added, \u201cGood riddance.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s like a shadow of sapingo is departing from the sky,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n A person wrote, \u201cMiami has a \u2018weak mayor\u2019 system, and no one exemplified that more than Francis. Sent from my MiamiPhone.\u201d<\/p>\n A user reflected, \u201cHe spent his time counting his money and working out.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis dude did a generational grift,\u201d another said. \u201cGood for him. I guess\u201d<\/p>\n An anonymous user wrote, \u201cIt was always funny seeing the venture capital, crypto, and tech bros acting like he was extremely powerful and credit him for every little thing. It must pain them so much to see their macho, weightlifting, swaggering avatar being replaced by a bookish white lady. lol\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, one remarked, \u201cMayor Ponzi Postalita.\u201d<\/p>\n One commenter was not pleased that the mayor did not initiate the removal of City Manager Art Noriega after it was revealed that his wife\u2019s furniture company had been awarded more than $440,000 in city contracts<\/a> for new office furniture and furniture assembly. <\/p>\n \u201cOne of the powers that the mayor of Miami actually does have is to initiate the firing of the City Manager,\u201d the comment reads. \u201cSuarez not only sat back and did nothing while his city manager was incompetent at his job, but didn\u2019t say a thing when it was discovered that the city had been pumping millions of dollars to his [sic] the city manager\u2019s wife\u2019s furniture business.\u201d<\/p>\n The Reddit user also appears to be an avid New Times reader: \u201cMeanwhile, he departs $5 million richer than when he came in, after many seeker [sic] consulting gigs that he never had to disclose.\u201d<\/p>\n
