ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 SeaWorld announced Sunday that Katina, one of its \u201cbeloved\u201d killer whales, has died at age 50 after a period of declining health.<\/p>\n

According to the park<\/a>, Katina\u2019s condition had worsened in recent weeks as she entered her geriatric years. Animal care and medical teams monitored her around the clock and ultimately shifted their focus to prioritizing her comfort and welfare. She died surrounded by staff members who had worked with her for nearly four decades.<\/p>\n

SeaWorld described Katina as having a \u201cbig personality,\u201d known for sticking out her tongue and performing a signature \u201cspeed swim\u201d that sent a cyclone of water across her habitat.<\/p>\n

For years, Katina was a central figure at the park and helped inspire millions of visitors to learn more about killer whales, SeaWorld officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an incredibly difficult time for those who knew and loved Katina,\u201d the park said on social media<\/a>, adding that it appreciates the support of the community and the whale\u2019s many fans as they grieve her loss.<\/p>\n
