Travelers come to South Florida for the sun, beaches, and dining, but the Broward Sheriff\u2019s Office is warning visitors not to let unlicensed rideshare solicitors at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport derail their trip.\n<\/p>\n

The BSO Airport District is advising passengers to be alert for illegal rideshare drivers and to follow safety protocols when arranging ground transportation from the airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristmas brings a surge of travelers, and whenever the terminals get packed, the number of unlicensed rideshare drivers trying to blend in rises along with it,\u201d BSO Airport District Capt. Brian Montgomery said. \u201cLet me be clear \u2014 operating as an unlicensed driver is illegal. We\u2019re tightening our curbside oversight and increasing patrols to keep travelers safe and ensure everyone gets to their destination without being swindled.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Officials recommend several steps to avoid becoming a victim of unauthorized drivers.\n<\/p>\n

Passengers should rely on their rideshare app, not personal solicitations. Drivers who approach travelers with phrases such as \u201cI\u2019m your driver\u201d or \u201cAre you going to Miami?\u201d are a red flag, authorities said. Legitimate drivers will ask for the passenger\u2019s name, and riders should always confirm the driver\u2019s name, license plate, and vehicle through the app before entering a car.<\/p>\n

Travelers are also urged to use only designated rideshare pickup zones at the airport. Authorized drivers are familiar with these locations and display company decals on their vehicles. The absence of proper identification is another warning sign, according to BSO.\n<\/p>\n

Officials stress that travelers should refuse rides from anyone operating without authorization. Riding with an illegal driver carries significant risk, as the individual may not have a valid driver\u2019s license or may have a criminal background. Licensed options such as Uber, Lyft, taxis, and limousines offer background checks and trip tracking for added safety.\n<\/p>\n

BSO encourages travelers to trust their instincts and report suspicious activity. \u201cIf it feels off, don\u2019t get in the car,\u201d the agency said, reminding passengers that personal safety should always come first.\n<\/p>\n
