Longtime observers or first-timers are welcome to a Kwanzaa celebration Saturday, Dec. 27, at Broward\u2019s African-American Research Library and Cultural Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The event,\u00a0\u201cAfrica Rising: Celebrating Heritage, Building Futures,\u201d\u00a0will emphasize\u00a0Kujichagulia (Self-Determination),\u00a0the second principle of Kwanzaa, encouraging individuals and families to define, create, and speak for themselves while honoring African and African diasporic cultural traditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cKujichagulia celebrates the power of naming ourselves, telling our own stories, and shaping our collective future,\u201d said Dr. Tameka Hobbs, historian and AARLCC library manager.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For the physically oriented, the event will include Kemetic Yoga and West African dance.<\/p>\n

For the intellectually curious, workshops and community discussions will explore Kwanzaa basics, community, investing in Africa, and a live cooking demonstration.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0youth and family zone\u00a0will include storytelling, creative arts, coding, gardening, and hands-on cultural workshops.<\/p>\n

Vendors, artisans, creators, and food trucks will be there tempt attendants with their goods.<\/p>\n

This year marks the\u00a0inaugural Nguzo Saba Awards, honoring seven outstanding community leaders whose work embodies the core principles of\u00a0Kwanzaa. Community members are encouraged to submit nominations recognizing local leaders who exemplify unity, purpose, teamwork, creativity, and faith.<\/p>\n
