That voice was sharpened by spending his high school and undergraduate years in North Central Florida.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I went to Ocala, everyone was tan and so unbelievably friendly and warm,\u201d Shropshire said.<\/p>\n
Elmo\u2019s first claim to fame was in the emerging Marion County horse industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cI used to get up in the morning, 5 o\u2019clock every morning, and ride horses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
His work included exercising Florida\u2019s first Kentucky Derby winner, \u201cNeedles.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dad thought he was really special. I didn\u2019t know the difference,\u201d Shropshire said.<\/p>\n
In Gainesville, Elmo eventually found his love for music when he met the future founder of the Eagles, Bernie Leadon.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe went to one of them\u2019s tiny little apartment and those two guys were playing. And I thought this is the most amazing thing in the world, I was so blown away,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Holiday hit brings lasting fame<\/p>\n
In the early 1980s, he struck gold with \u201cGrandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut anyway, it\u2019s good musically, and it has all the wonderful trappings of Christmas: you know the goose is on the table, grandpa drinking beer and watching TV,\u201d Shropshire said.<\/p>\n
Elmo calls the song a \u201ccareer-stopping hit.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really a heartwarming thing to have a lot of people you don\u2019t know think you\u2019re great, even though all you did was sing a song like 40-some years ago, and it\u2019s a great, and I\u2019ll take it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
