As a lifelong Floridian, I was admittedly late to the party. I hadn’t known this Polynesian paradise existed just a few hours from home. Once I pulled into the covered driveway, parked for a modest self-park fee, and stepped onto the lush property framed by tiki torches and tropical gardens, I was instantly transported somewhere else entirely. The contrast between the ordinary Federal Highway and that magical tiki facade was unforgettable.

Here in Orlando, we have our share of hidden bars and coastal destinations like the new Dirty Birds nearby. But this, Mai Kai, is worth a quick trip to Fort Lauderdale. It is a historic restaurant originally opened in the 1950s and operating almost continuously for the past five decades.

I just got back from a recent visit, the first time since this legendary spot went through a multi-year closure and major refurbishment. Put on some Martin Denny or other tiki music and escape to The Mai Kai with me.

Mai Kai Fort Lauderdale – image from Dani MeyeringMai Kai’s Long-Awaited Refresh

The updates feel respectful. The soul of the space remains intact, which longtime fans will appreciate. I loved revisiting the outdoor tropical gardens and felt a warm sense of nostalgia seeing the individual dining rooms practically unchanged, just polished up, and each of their individual island names kept intack.

Visiting during the holiday season added an extra layer of magic, especially knowing how much anticipation surrounded the reopening. The Molokai Bar is almost the same, save for the waterfall window effect. I will gladly lose this effect if that means many more decades of Mai-Kai memories.

Molokai Bar and entrance to Mai-Kai – image by Dani MeyeringThe New Bora Bora Bar

One of the most noticeable additions is the outdoor Bora Bora Bar, which was absolutely packed when we visited. Every seat was taken, standing room was full, and the energy was lively. It immediately stood out as a spot I’d love to return to, specifically for outdoor hangs, cocktails, and a more casual tiki experience.

If your idea of a date night leans more social and relaxed, this bar alone is reason enough to plan a return visit.

Bora Bora Bar – image by Dani MeyeringA Behind-the-Scenes Detail That Time Didn’t Touch

A behind-the-scenes area I toured more than ten years ago is still visible through a window in the gift shop. From there, you can watch staff mixing drinks for restaurant diners and show attendees, and they can see you watching them.

It’s a small detail, but one that quietly reinforces how much of the Mai-Kai’s original spirit remains intact.

blog post images – 1Why the Mai-Kai Still Belongs on Your Date Night List

The Mai-Kai continues to deliver escapism, atmosphere, and ritual. It’s a special experience if you’re willing to make the short drive from Orlando. Budget about $150 – $200 for a round of drinks plus dinner and gratuity.

This isn’t a quick stop or a casual drop-in. It’s an evening, or better yet, part of a weekend getaway. And that’s exactly the point.

Know Before You GoGive yourself time:Mai-Kai is meant to be experienced slowly. Plan for a full evening rather than a quick drink.Outdoor vs. indoor vibes: Bora Bora Bar is lively and social; indoor dining and show spaces feel more immersive and theatrical.Parking: On-site parking is available, but arrive early on busy nights. Many nights, parking is valet only for around $8.Dress the part: This is a great excuse to lean into tiki style or at least dress for a fun night out.Worth the drive: If you love places with history and atmosphere, this Fort Lauderdale classic is an easy Florida road-trip date.

Mai Kai Polynesian Restaurant & Show
3599 N.
