Today’s Big Stories

1. More than 150,000 NYC students were homeless during last school year

For the 10th year, more than 100,000 students were homeless under the federal definition of the word last school year.

More than 65,000 students spent at least one night during the last school year in a city shelter. Those students face barriers to getting an education, including difficulty getting to school and high rates of chronic absenteeism.

2. Former New York state prison guard found guilty in beating death of inmate, 2 others acquitted

A former New York state prison guard was found guilty of murder Monday in the death of an inmate beaten while handcuffed, while two other guards were acquitted for their roles in the beating that was caught on body-camera footage.

A jury delivered the verdicts in a courtroom just miles from the Marcy Correctional Facility, where Robert Brooks was pummeled by correctional officers upon his arrival on the night of Dec. 9.

3. Buy a piece of NYC: CityStore is back with new look

CityStore is a retail shop in Lower Manhattan run by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, or DCAS. It features New York City-themed items, including apparel and other merchandise from various city agencies.

NY1’s Roger Clark got an inside look at the store, which recently got a new look, feel and website.

4. Finding hidden gems through Open House New York

New Yorkers got a chance to be tourists in their own city this past weekend through the Open House New York Weekend Festival.

The three-day event allows attendees to explore hundreds of unique sites around the city that are typically off-limits or off the radar.

5. Nearly 3 weeks in, no consensus on ending government shutdown in sight

Two days after Americans protested Trump administration policies at nationwide “No Kings Day” rallies, congressional Republicans doubled down on their claims that the Democrats are beholden to radical elements of their party.

On Day 20 of a government shutdown with no end in sight, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said the rallies were about “politics” and “spectacle.”

6. U.S. envoys Witkoff and Kushner arrive in Israel to shore up Gaza ceasefire after dozens killed

Two of U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoys traveled to Israel today to shore up the ceasefire in Gaza, a day after deadly violence gave the fragile deal its first major test.

On Sunday, Israel had threatened to halt shipments of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and its forces killed dozens of Palestinians in strikes after accusing Hamas militants of killing two soldiers. Israel later said it had resumed enforcing the ceasefire.
