NEW YORK (WABC) — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Monday that Metro-North is expanding service to the state capital in Albany.
Metro-North will run one roundtrip train from Grand Central to the Albany-Rensselaer station in Rensselaer starting in the spring.
The Metro-North fares will be on the low end of Amtrak, with one way tickets at around $40, and will be fixed, unlike Amtrak trains that can shoot up to more than $100.
The service will follow existing Hudson Line stops from Grand Central Terminal to Poughkeepsie, where Metro-North service currently terminates, and then head about 80 miles north.
The announcement came after Amtrak cut two daily trips between New York City and Albany-Rensselaer earlier this year – prompting a search to augment service on a vital link for state business.
As part of the announcement, Hochul said Amtrak agreed to add a daily train in each direction between New York City and Albany-Rensselaer beginning Dec. 1, and cap the coach flex fares at $99 round trip.
