To The Editor:

Every weekday, I walk my 2nd and 5th grader to and from Prospect Hill Elementary through
Pelham Manor. It should be a simple, peaceful routine, but too often, what should be a casual
stroll to the school feels like a high stakes game of Frogger.

I experience cars rolling through stop signs at Pelhamdale and Black, while families are still in
the crosswalk. It’s just a matter of time until these walks turn tragic for the families of Pelham
Manor. This ever-present fear isn’t something we have to accept and is completely avoidable.

Toward the end of last year, a group of concerned parents met with the Village of Pelham Manor
and Police Department to consider more visible signage, stricter speed enforcement, and raise
community awareness. For a while, there was a noticeable increase in police presence which
resulted in slowed speeds and greater compliance. After this short deployment, the presence
disappeared and we are now back to the same dangers as before.

We need representatives who persist until a problem is solved. As we think about the upcoming
elections, it’s important to remember we are neighbors and the issues our trustees tackle are
local ones, that we as a community have the power to solve.

I urge all candidates to take this issue seriously, and make pedestrian safety a real priority in
Pelham Manor. Our children deserve to walk to school feeling safe. Pelham is a wonderful place
to raise a family. Let’s act together to make the daily activity of walking in Pelham Manor one
that is enjoyable, safe, and consistent.
